what's good my HR fam. ok, i feel like i'm at a fork in the road in my music life. i've been doing music for it seems like forever and my main thing is producing but i've always wanted to do an album myself (yes i mean i want to rap) but mainly i just want to get some things off my chest because i feel that i have some things that need to be said to the hip-hop community. this is where the trouble lies though... see i always have these great ideas for songs and i can visualize the whole thing in my head but when it comes to putting it down it's like i'm stuck. let me clarify. i have no problems with making the beat but i have a MAJOR problem with writing. i can never seem to put my words together correctly, so i'm always doubting myself when it comes to being an artist. i really wouldn't sweat the issue if i felt that it wasn't in me, but i feel that i can really do this if i had the right direction or the right motivation. i'm just curious to how some of you artist out there express your feelings and emotions on paper... any advice would be greatly appreciated. thanks in advance and GOD BLESS until next time...

just start writing -- that's where it begins. write poems, write feelings... then just make them into a "story" with rhyming words. it just takes time and practice to 'feel the flow' and make it all work. i'm no pro, but that's my advice.

bless.

my dad got me a rhyming dictionary. Fucking greatest thing ever, same thin with a thesaurus.

for me when i do like real joints.... meaning non-club/mixtape tracks I just sort of get into a poetry mood and just go with it..... for starters just get your ideas out on paper then work on orginizing(sp) and putting them together with rhymes and all that good stuff.......

I appreciate the advice guys. I got myself a notebook so i'm just going to start writing down everything like FYRE suggested. my biggest concern is I don't want to fall into this hole that hip-hop music is in right now, you know like generic beats, simple rhymes and songs about the same ish... cars, girls, money...ya'll know. I want to be able to contribute more than that... i've said before that I don't care if this album takes me 7 years to make, as long as when it's done I know that I gave it my all....i can truly live with that. sorry for being so long winded, and thanks again for the advice..

no problem man ill help all i can lol i just like good music.....

Yep. Write everything, and don't worry about it rhyming right off the bat. Put the words down first, then later, when you have teh whole idea out, work on organizing it into a songlike structure.

I think Godman hit it on the head!
Get your story straight first, then go back and re-arrange it and then you can change words and find common words that rhyme (for rap purposes) The good thing with rap, is there is so much slang out there. So when you can't find a "proper word" to rhyme with, you can get ghetto and find some slang to pop in there. Sheeeeet, you can even go Snoop Doggish and make up sh*t........I'm an RnB singer, so I just basically relay my feelings into music, I think it is easier to do than Rapping.

I'm new to home recording and I don't know the first thing about rap or hip-hop but I love playing about with drum loops. Anyway, if you're struggling to write stuff then try the following:

  • Be honest with yourself - say what you feel.
  • Don't worry about what other people think.
  • ENJOY YOURSELF. Have fun.
:D
  • If you get stuck, move on to another verse or chorus or song. Move on, forget about the problem and come back to it later.
  • Things often come together at the last minute - up until you've finished something it doesn't matter what it sounds like.
  • If you don't like something, scrap it. Move on.
  • Use that notebook. It's private, it's yours and it's your chance to get something down that's fresh in your mind.
  • Don't worry that people won't "get it". They will.
  • Remember: no pressure. Just let it go. There's always another piece of blank paper and another take.

And did I say "enjoy yourself"? :p

Relax, get into it and experiment. Get formal, get sloppy, get serious and humorous. Try those side-alleys. Best of luck. :)
