I just picked up an acoustic 5 string bass and was wondering if the Acoustic preamp would be a good choice for it or would I need something special?

I dont belive theres not any acoustic bass Players out there.

I have a Washburn AB-20 but I have not recorded with it much.

I pretty much used the same DI (SansAmp) as for my electrics but I was never happy with the SamsAmp alone on my electrics. Since I got the ART TubPac I run the DI into it and my electrics sound great now. I have not tried the acoustic this way yet though.

To answer your question about the Acoustic preamp...wich acoustic preamp do you have?

Most of the acoustic/electrics use piezo transducers with a built in pre-amp on the bass for your bass amp. I would think that any decent mic pre would do OK for recording.
If you have an acoustic guitar pre (wich is what I am assuming) that would also work for boosting the signal and would be designed for the higher impedance of the piezo's but your EQ on the pre would be preset for optimal guitar frequencies and may not be of much benefit to you.

I have not read any articles on acoustic bass gutiar recording and only heard two albums/CD's that really featured a studio recorded (not the live "unplugged" ones).

One is The Violent Femmes CD wich has a killer but unrefined sound and the other was by some German Jazz bass player - I forget his name - but he did alot of chords etc and that CD did not do much for me...I like jazz but it was kinda too right brained exploring theory and did not connect with me inspirationally.
Any way what exactly do you have and what are you wanting to do with it recording wise?

I have a Rogue Hap 2C Accoustic 2 channel pre. It has a direct in channel and an identical channel for a phantom powered mic. Doesnt make a bad mic pre in a pinch but I have a Presonus blue tube for my vocals. Built in chorus and parametric and compression.

I am not familiar with the Rogue acoustic pre but I would A/B it with the Presonus and use what sounds best to you.

From what I have read just about everything that sounds good as a good clean pre for vocals also good for bass DI on the electrics.

As I said before I have not really tried to record the acoustic bass guitar. The volume output on these strictly acoustic wise is quite a bit lower than acoustic guitars so I am not so sure how well micing would work but you could try to mix the two signals.

Unfortunatley I have yet to see an article reguarding any tips for recording acoustic bass guitar but if I see any I will try to post a link here for you.

Looking at your post numbers you have been here and probably recording a lot longer than myself.

I just try to post to any bass related issues I might be able to help with.
All I can say is what I see repeated here by the ones I respect the most....don't focus too much on gear and work to get the best with what you have. Experiment and use what works for ya the best.

High Post count really means nothing,I learn from Newbies on a weekly basis here.

You my bass playing friend are a wise man!

Post back and let me know about your experiences.

I have written some solo acoustic bass stuff but have not been too motivated to work on recording any of it yet.

Jonas Hellborg (not sure on that spelling) was the German jazz bass I player that has done some entire solo CD's featuring acoustic bass guitar.

On another note have you seen or played the Taylor acoustic bass co-designed by Flieshman? I have read great reviews about it and they look just beautifull! Unfortunately it's way out of my price range and I have never even seen one to try out in person but I sure want to.

I played one...dont remember which one it was. It was really nice though.
