Yeah I been drinkin, SO!?
Just watched Les Claypool's DVD with several of his acts on it, including oysterhead, during which Trey Anastasio plays a guitar with an antler attached. He seems to achieve a theremin-type effect with it, and I just wondered if anyone knew anything about how this guitar worked. Googled it, couldn't find much. Here's the only pic I found:

Looks to me like a one string electric upright bass. some people refer to these as 'strumsticks' when they are shorter in scale - like a primitive, diy guitar.

No, not the bassist, the guitarist, the dude with the deer antler sticking out of his instrument.

What Les is playing is his Whamola, which is a one-string upright bass, yeah. He beats it with a drumstick, as can be seen. Are you sure that antler thing is a guitar?

Yeah, you can see him playing it on Les' "5 gallons of deisel" dvd. I swear, he plays that antler like a theremin.

Could be a theremin encased in that antler thing.

After some careful scholarship, which mostly involved a couple of Google searches, I have determined that this instrument is called the "Matterhorn", and consists of a guitar with a built-in theremin, connected to the antlers. All this from very non-authoritative sources, so there you go . . .

yeah my buddy cole is a les fanatic. les is playing the whamola, which was built by a fan for him.... cole in fact built a replica...... and that antler thing is a theramin/guitar as mshilarious. you ask me anything about les or the people he plays with i can most likely find out within a week.
