I've listened to a great many artist's/engineers in this clinic, and i do belive i'm at the bottom of the pool. Not looking for a pat on the back, just needing some serious help with my mixing skills. I've had a couple hearing tests in the past five years, and was told my right ear is well...the high freq just aren't there anymore, and i think my left ear is going on me too (runs in my family). Anyway's I AINT GONNA GIVE UP TILL IT'S GONE. I've been working on this tune the past two day's, I'm thinking i need to just retrack everything (i can't the drums though). Give me some idea's if you will. "Anticipation" is the song...thanks http://www.nowhereradio.com/david/singles

this is a great song! I really like the vocals! The recording sounds great too! you definitely mislead in your post because this kicks some serious ass! I'll let the others give mix suggestions.. Kick ass song here! Don't like some of the drum fill sounds, but screw it.. this tune is too cool for me to bitch..

I was "exceeding bandwidth" for some reason....I'll try again later.

Come on BlackSabbith, you of all people in here know better than this. Screw the song as a whole, tell me how bad the gtrs sound, that you didn't like the panning. Tell me the bass is distorted and it sounds like the much to distorted guitars. Please no sugar coating, rip me a new one, cause I already know you got skills for day's...

David, it seems like you're giveing yourself a rather hard time........this sounds good man.....................everythings clear, vocals are great...........solid guitar tones......stop dumping on yourself.....you're good

this song is nowhere near the bottom of the HR.COM ladder....i know this because i can barely see you from down here....:D

hey, the recording and mix are good....good song and great playing......

as far as the ears, i guess referencing with CD's you are familiar with may help you not go overboard overcompensating for the highs, which didnt seem to be a problem here.......

pat yourself on the back brutha.....5 stars coming your way.....

Sorry pal, you're nowhere near the botoom of the foodchain. I'm listening and I can't hear anything to gig you on. This pretty damn good all the way around.

A real epic song you got going here David. Very cool vibe to the whole thing. The bridge/chorus thing is great!

Odd timing issues here and there that I'm sure you are aware of.

Nice leads.

The mix needs a bit more life to it. It sounds a tad muffled to me, more stereo definition in the rhythm guitars might help. They could be louder as well.

Great singing!

Nice job. Very 70's hard rock sounding. The drums sounded great. The kick could use a little more body. The bass sounded good to me. It didn't conflict with anything and filled the lower end nicely. Maybe bring it up a bit. The vocals sounded great. What kind of mic and pre?The lead guitar sound was killer, as was the playing.

there really isn't much to critisize in this mix. seriously!

THIS SUCKS!!!!!

Worst Freaking Mix EVER!!

There are bad mixes, and then there are mixes that make bad mixes sound good. This mix is so flipping bad, that all the horrible mixes that have ever been mixed are standing up with big huge horrible smiles on their faces saying, "SEE, AT LEAST I'M NOT THAT BAD!!"

________________________________________________

Sheesh. You and Crawdad...you both bitch about the loss of upper range hearing, but you put out work that shames me and 90% of the people on this bbs.

I have 20% hearing left in my right ear, so maybe I'm unreliable, but this sounds damned good to my deaf self.

If I could change anything, it'd be the chorus or doubling of the lead vocal...I just don't like that effect on a vocal, but it's certainly not out of place, and DAMN...what a voice!!!

Nice Job.

I most really be hung over from last night if you think this is bad.

I'm 18 again. I love this tune and the sound. I love good time bluesy rock and this is all that. My hearing is shot too so you've mixed it perfectly for my ears. The slow downs are great.

Nice work.

wow, cool tune. It's obviously very well done, very complete without sounding overproduced. I'm a bottom runger here but I'm going to offer some critique anyhow. I think I know what you were going for and why your original post is a little misleading.

It's kind of nitpicking but here's what I thought.

There was too much headroom left in the mixdown. It played pretty quiet on my pc.
The vocal track was too loud, there were some passages where the drums started sounding kind of alone as well.
The guitars were too trebly and the bass too bassy. It needed more "in your face" mid range grit. The performance was there but the mix didn't really bring it out.

It reminded me a lot of Alice. :O

you want honest, right? :p

well.. first off,... you're sorely underestimating your "status" around here... you're definitely not anywhere near the bottom of the barrel...

now.. as for this song... the gits sound good.. the mix is pretty good.. and the vocals are great... but...

(and there's always a but... :p )

the drums kinda suck. :p well... primarily the toms... Now... I understand it's because you're using sampled drum sounds... but the drum track is by far the lowest "grade" track in the song... This tune would be screamin' if it weren't for the fisher-price drum sounds.. :p I'm not knockin' ya for it, really... I myself just plain don't use drums at all, simply because I know all I could do right now is use cheesy samples... but since you wanted input,.. that's mine... get some decent drum sounds, or figure out how to mic some up live, and this song could that much better. That's the only real "complaint" I could think of while listening.

Fuck mixing skills, you're a rocknroll singer and a rocknroll guitar player! Get some other loser to mix it!

Seriously, sounds really good. I agree that the drums are a problem. Seems this kind of music needs a real drummer. Or, something I heard someone do, is they took a loop from a Rolling Stone record, one that started with a couple bars of drums (can't remember which one), but it sounded really cool. Had a real atmosphere, and the repeating loop made it sound more modern, too. (Don't know if you'd be into something like that, though, but might be better than a drum machine.) Also, maybe bring the rhythm guitars in a little, not panned quite as much.

But really, just get a drummer and a bass player and hit the road and be a rockstar and get groupies and stuff! :D

Sounds great,
Macle

I dont hear this kind of vocal talent everyday. I dont hear this kind of projected energy everyday. I dont hear this kind of mix everyday.

In short, this is some extremely well done stuff.

Funk on!

five stars

David, I like this song. Reminds me of some old Moxy. The gtrs sounded good. Your vocals puts mine to shame. I wont comment to much on the mix, cause as much as I hate to admit it, my hearing is also going south.... Just had a hearing test at work. My left ear has severe damage. Thats a relief, I thought it was my sound card or my monitor amp.... Its a wonder I have any hearing at all after all the years of gigin and gtr amp wars with band members. Your not at the bottom by a long shot. Giving the song a second listen and I really like it..... Keep up the good work. Keep Rockin....

kiss my ass david....."this sucks".....shut up.......liar!.....lol
very unique voice..which is always a good thing..are you playing the guitar too?!?!?!?......man that guitar really sucks ........yeah right.......:D .....yes drums do suck but the rest is so good i dont even notice it that much?......ok the drums as a part in this song doesnt suck just the drum sound....?..make sense?...

well i have to say this song kicked ass....nice work.

B.Sabbath: Thanks, I'm glad you liked it.I figured you would be the one to burn me at the stake:D. Thanks bro...

powderfinger: Thank you, I'll try not to be so hard on my self in the future. Noticed you got another tune up, ill give it a whirl in a bit...Thanks!

mixmkr: Thanks for trying at least!

Gidge: Ha yeah, i'm still the one looking up at you guy's. Yeah you know, I haven't even referenced a cd with these monitors yet. I'm a big dummy, I first heard that when I came on this site back in 99. Hell I think it was "you" that said it!:D . Thanks bro!

Trackrat: Hey if it's good enough for you...I'll quit knockin myself around so much...cause you be da man! Thanks bro!

Emeric: Thanks for the kind words. I was having such a hard time with the distorted bass, i just didn't spend enough time on the rhythm gtr's, I hear what your saying though. Timing issues? haha wow, yeah there's a plenty. But that was my fault, not the drummers. Thanks bud!

JR#97: Thanks! Yeah it's 70ish or so, dated material for sure! Glad you liked it. I couldn't bring the bass up anymore without it being pretty distorted. This was over a year ago when i tracked the bass, I was experimenting with miking the bass cab with an akg kick mic:confused: . Used a 57 on the gtr cab, and at/4050 on the vocals..art dual pre. Thanks for your time man!

chrisharris: I'm bringing you're daughter's song back to the top of the page again...and there aint a damn thing you can do about it:D , it's gonna hit 2000 or bust!
Man get outta here, your just being nice to me for some horrible reason or another! I listened to your mixes, they sound fantastic. Yeah i'm not really fund of that effect either, "pitch fine" was the preset on the vocals, and it was kinda cheesey huh? I have to hide behind the effects though or you would laugh! Thanks bro!

Flash: Ya head better bro? Ha, Thanks a lot guy!

jjtcorsair: Sorry about your hearing..waz that what ya say?:D . Glad you liked it bro!

Dough H: I agree with every damn thing you said..uh typed! But one thing has me curious..."it reminded me a lot of Alice" Thanks guy!

WATYF: Sorry for my dumbass-ness but what does WATYF mean? Or do i really want to know:D . Yeah the drums do sound like toy's, but the drummer' man this was a one take for him and he hadn't played in six months or so, he's really a great drummer and first class "humanbeing" all the way. But the sonofabitch after 25yr's of playing music with his sorry 6'8 long legged shit breath ass..(sorry had to get that out) MOVED!!300 MILES AWAY!!
Sorry bout that dude:D Thanks for the complements!

macle: Hey bro, thanks for the review! No i wouldn't be smart enough for the loop de loop thingie :D . Yeah next time i mix this thing I'll pay more attention to the rhythm gtrs. No thanks, at 43 hittin the road is the last thing on my mind, but the groupie and stuff thing, yeah i could still dig that! Thanks bro!

erichenryus: "can't stream"? I dunno?

CyanJaguar: I've heard one tune of your's a long time ago, and it put this to shame. That's some very powerful kind words you gave me...i don't deserve them, but I thank you.

Myx62: "My left ear has severe damage...that's a relief"  Hey man i love ya for the kind word's and all, but did you look at what you said here? Damn man I wouldn't trade my hearing or any body function i have for well...anything, mabey to save my children but that's it. Yeah i hear ya:D about the loud amps over the years and such, but what did the most damage to my right ear was Ted Nugent 78, Jackson Miss. The man should of been shot on site, for the deafness he placed on me and several thousand people that night:( . Thanks man!

jamal buckethead err buchet:D :Kiss my ass. Yeah that's just my old drummer pal and me. Hey thanks there dude, you play a damn mean ax yourself. Thanks!

Wow, That took me longer than the mix itself. guess i did need a pat on the back after all, i sure feel a lot better. But i still know i stink at this. Thanks a bunch fellows!
