I've also posted this under Newbies, because I am one.
Apologies if this wastes anybody's time.

Hi all,

I have another message up seeing if someone can help me figure out how to get line input on an HP Omnibook XE2, but anticipating bad results (my HP experiences have been generally lousy, and by most accounts an adapted mic jack is no match for a good line in), I think I should research external sound cards that meet my extremely modest needs.

Essentially, I'm self-producing segments for a radio show I host, and would like to be able to dump stuff off my portable cassette deck (and maybe someday MD recorder) onto my computer, then put an audio bed under it with a simple multi-track program and then record it to CD-R.

The question is (assuming I can't get this &^%$ sound card to take line input) what USB devices would y'all recommend to me? Please bear in mind that my needs are simple and I'm not into really serious recording, so price is almost my top priority. I really just need something that can take a line in and stuff it into my computer.

Thanks for any and all help!

some usb interfaces to consider are:
Aardvark USB3
Ego Systems U2A
Roland UA-3 (i think it only does 16/44.1)
Roland UA-30

I have an Aardvark USB, which is fairly simple to use but doesn't support MIDI. Check out the USB Quattro and USB Duo at www.midiman.com . I would be interested to know what others think about all three of these rigs. The beta PC driver has just come out for the Quattro.

The Quattro is the Anti-Christ.

Avoid it.

Works when it is in the mood, awful driver support, and I have the reviews to back up people's hatred of this unit.
Go to: www.zzounds.com/a--2676837 and read the reviews for yourself.

We dumped ours ASAP.

Thanks for the warning. Do you know anything about the Duo?

FYI, I have started a new thread in the newbies section on the Aardvark USB3/Cakewalk Guitar Tracks bundle, for anyone who is interested. Come on over!
