I have this strange gut feeling that I am supposed to buy this thing. I have not even listened to it. I don't know where this feeling comes from. Is this thing any good, would a analog tube preamp be a better choice? This product would not even be for me, more like my friend who does hip/hop rap producing and the base of his music is wrapped around vocals and he wants to expand into vocal effect and such.

Is this unit good is the basic question.

are you looking at this unit

as just a mic preamp ? You didn't mention the auto-tune feature which is pretty much what i would think that someone would want this particular unit for. Maybe im way off here but I think if your just looking for a pre-amp there are way better options for the money.

well he has a rode mic and that comes with a decent preamp. he is more looking along the lines of effects I believe for vocals

last price i saw for the vocal producer

was around 500 dollars. If hes just looking for effects he could prob pick up a descent lexicon or T.C. Electronics unit for around the same or even 2 of their lower models and stay within the 500 range.
I guess the vocal producer could be cool though, i just haven't read or heard anything about it. I think a hefty amount of that price is the auto-tune pitch correction. The stand alone antares auto-tune is around 400 bucks.
