does anyone have feedback about the quality of results that you can acheive with the Antares Microphone Modeler plugin?

i dont usually put software based plugins inline when going to "tape", but I my only microphones are the MXL 990 and 991. I like them, but I am looking to get that extra something without putting out the coin for nicer mics.

btw. i like the MXL mics, but I have the feeling they are not the greatest from the price I paid.

Thanks for insight you might have about the Antares Microphone Modeler.

I have it. It's a cool tool, but IMO not worth the price. Better to spend your money on decent microphones.

I tried one a few years ago, it left here pretty quickly. Get a decent mic collection and steer clear of that box.

I get some cool sounds out of it cause I don't use it to try to use it to model mics. I use it on it's extreme settings--lots of gain, proximity way up close, tube gain all up ons, etc. especially with some of the screaming bands I record, it works to compress and really hype the sound of their voice, like a performance intensifier. I like it for that, but that's about all I've found that's useful.

Tried the demo a couple years ago, then again recently when I had some different mic's to try with it. The aesthetic I'm shooting for is richly textured natural acoustic sound, and I didn't think it was of any use to me unfortunately.

$50 a mic and you think they're not that great? They're hard to beat for the money, IMO.

I haven't used the plugin, sorrt for the worthless post.

I've used it- more like a creative EQ than a mic replacement.

Its primary value in my mind is when you're doing something silly like recording 47 tracks of backing vocals and you onlly have one mic. The room and mic's signature tends to build up a lot so you use the Mic Mod to change them all to different "mics" to ease off that wierd sounding buildup that happens.

Better to have differnet mics and use them well, and not really worth the price for just this one trick, but....

Take care,
Chris

I've tried it and haven't really played with it much but IMO it didn't really do much to the track unless, like others have pointed out, you do drastic adjustments for EQ or gain purposes. I would't buy the plugin however, I would rather choose having different colored mics.

So what, exactly, does it do? I pretty much assumed that they were doing something like keeping the response curves of a wide range of mics so you could see some of the quirks of the mic you were using, and flatten the response out a bit....

i tested it, never testing it again,
ehm, to me it is something you use when u got a fucked up audio track that sounds like shit, what do most people do then?
put lots of FX on it, start tweaking the hell out of it in hope to fix the sound,
nah, doesn't work,
record your stuff again, with , like everyone says, different mics,
and different positions

sure, might be a nice tool, but just record your stuff right,
don't try to fix everything in the mix ;)

It doesn't FIX anything. Think of it as audio effects that have a different set of parameters.

You can't be helped.

I think the Mic Modeler was a cool idea and Antares devoted some time and energy into coming up with an innovative product. However, in the final analysis, it just seems to be a bunch of eq curves. That in and of itself can be useful as long as you are willing to pay for it and know that it cannot replicate the electrical impulses that actually come from the sampled mics.
So, you have to decide for yourself if the price of admission is worth it. Most people would rather throw money at something else.

Good luck,
Terry

In it's defence

I have it... but I wish I didn't.

In it's defence though, contrary to what others have said, it has helped on one tricky vocal track where proximity effect took a firm hold. My vocalist lives hundreds of miles away and the take sounded good at the time. It was only during mixing that it was obviously too much. On that occasion this plug in did a really good job and saved having to record again.
In an ideal world I would have just called him over to do it again but when that isn't an option this worked well.
