Whasup folks. I got the reason demo because i'm thinking about buying this program. I like fruity for drumming capabilities but i haven't been able to find alot of "great" sounding soundfonts and sometimes i get tired of lugging my triton around. Demo's sound straight and i wanna try something. First of all, how do i control this program with my keyboard thru midi(usin a psr 540 for that)? And, how do i even record on this program? I'm totally lost but i'd like to tame this beast! I'm used to the FL studio/Acid Pro combo but i'm slowly moving towards the Reason/Adobe audition combo.

With Reason all you do is plugin a USB midi controller or midi interface. The psr 540 only has midi, so I think you need a midi interface. You might have this already set up since you used FL.

In Reason, go to (depending what version) preferences and select "Control Surfaces and Keyboards".

You can press the "Auto detect Surfaces" button and this will auto detect your keyboard or interface. You must have a new keyboard or interface for the auto detect. Otherwise, you can click "Add" and select "Other". Then you can select the desired midi port and channel...

That should be it. Let me know how that goes...

Man i'm seriously diggin reason. I love the way the program works. That joint is mad crazy how you can see the back of the units and switch the cables! And the plugins and sounds. WOW!! I can get the same sound out of fruity loops but i have to do alot of tweaking with outside plugins like waves plugins. Reason already has dope plugins and everything. I'm trying to learn as quick as i can in the little 20 minutes they give you for the demo. Man i'm lovin this program. I also like how redrum doesn't have alot of channels. That way i don't use 50 million drum sounds for one song. I can add another redrum if i'd like but i think i'll stick to one. As far as the keyboard, i don't have it with me today but i sure wish i did. I'm really loving the sounds.

Below is a link to the first "good" beat i could do in the little 20 minutes. I had to draw the notes in the sequencer(had a fruity loops flashback! :D) After i made it, i recorded it with acid(since you can't render with demo) and did some editing with acid and adobe audition. Came out pretty nice!

20 mins on a new program and you got that? very good, my man, very good. i think i loaded a demo of reason that came w/ a David Crowder Band cd, i was so confused by the look of it, i didnt know where to start. so i uninstalled it, lol.

hmm... i wonder if i could find a beginners tutorial.

Man i'm hooked on this program now. I'm LOVIN it!!! I've got to get this program. All other gear purchases are being put on hold. FL is about to take the back seat for a while. I'm learning the system so quick. At first i was skeptical about the sound quality being better but the more i use it, the more i see that it's true! I took some of the same drums that i use in FL studio and used them in reason and the sound quality is crisper. The program just runs alot smoother than FL. I'm so excited yall!! As soon as i get the full version i'm going to rewire it into Adobe AUDITION(as i've tried with the demo, OFF THE CHAIN!!). As soon as i finish typing, i'm going to find out how much it costs.

$400 dollars? AHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH!!! Why is everything so high?? Guess ill start savin. All those refills, i might be buying one every month. Gosh i can't wait.

UH OH!! They got reason at american musical with the easy payment plan! $133 for three months. (Tone Jonez Rubs his hands together). I'm about to buy that very soon. Comes with the dvd too.

are you in school? if so yo can get an academic discount. Hell of a first beat btw... good work!!

could somebody help me with rewiring reason into AA....... i got it to work but the latency is so crazy its not even worth it...... i gotta be doing something wrong.... when i press a key i get about a 1sec deley before its played and that just wont work

Man I couldnt agree with you more, I use to use Fruity Loops, until I played around with the Reason 3.0 demo, it gives you so much more control. I've been hooked every since

only thing i see that FL got on reason is the playlist thing where u map your beats out..... that and the fact that u can use vst... i like using battery for sampling so i just rewire reason in FL for now

Hey fyre, you can map the beats out in the sequencer window. They also have an alternate view that's something like piano roll. My respect for reason has went up 300% today. I picked up my keyboard from the church and hooked it up to reason and needless to say i'm completely blown away. I have so much more room to be creative that it's unbelievable. Also, soundfonts sound 10,000% better in reason than with the soundfont player on FL. There isn't much choppiness to the notes at all. I played a grand piano soundfont on there today and i really felt like i was playing a grand piano(except for not having weighted keys. :D ) I recorded it and imma try to post it for yall before i go to work. If i'd never heard it, you couldn't have told me it was done on the computer. Reason is off the chain yall!

Didn't get a chance to do that but i'll do it tonight when i get home. I listened to some of the beats i made with reason in my car, and the mixes are perfect!

I personally prefer to work with audio as opposed to MIDI, so I just do one instrument at a time in Reason. I have Pro Tools up and running and looping the song. Then I'll open Reason, and play whatever part I'm working on. Let's say it's bass. When I finish that I export it as a .wav file, and import it into Pro Tools. Then I'll go back to Reason and repeat this process for all the instruments I need to do. It's easy, there's no latency, and my rack in Reason stays simple, instead of getting cluttered up with a whole bunch of different pieces.
