Listening now

Opening is cool--a little static???? The harsh guitar is a too harsh, it is losing its tonality and becoming just noise. There is a fine balance and you are just a bit over the top.

Vocals are nice, but get lost in the harsh guitar. The guitar solo is nice but lost in the harshness of the backing guitar(is this a trend???). Bass is way buried. Drums are a little weak--they don't really "hit".

Re-record the harsh guitar, everything else is there, it just needs refinement in the mix.

Harsh guitar? Are you just meaning its too dirty? I dont know what you listen to regularly but yes this is the trend, at least around here. I am regurlarly preaching the less is more thing, but doesnt help much, people love driving an amp hard.
I'm not sure exactly what you mean by harsh though, the recording is bad? Or the guys guitar sound is just bad? Too much gain, too much top end? Too much mid? Comparing it to a lot of radio stuff, its pretty close in tonality, maybe I'm overlooking something.
Thanks....

Boy a ton of energy in this one. I liked that. Good singer. Double tracking on the vocals sounded good. Good guitar parts.

I liked that guitar playing through 2:20-2:40.

I thought some of the electric guitars sounded a little on the abrasive side. Could have their high-mids tamed maybe.

Small guitar syncing issue around :13-:14. Sounds like a mistake on the bass at 1:00.

guitar!

And lots of it! I like the solo spots where the pan center the left and right A+, just wish the stereo panned R/L guitars were not so brittle! careful on the pan knob at the end!:-} good job overall...

The band has real potential as it seems the songwriter has some idea of the melodic concept.

The intro is too long to be commercially viable though.

Definitely a B minus. I think they can really get a hit song with study, and maybe luck as hits take luck mosttimes.

score : B minus

I listened to the other song, and it is evident that the songwriter can construct melodically sound pieces. He needs to explore to find that thing that takes his songwriting over the top.

he has strong potential though.

I think I did go overbaord on rolling low end/ boosting high end on the guitars on Pour for sure, its more obvious in my car for some reason but it sure sounds slamming on my monitors.

Cyan- I passed your comments along to the band. How're you doing by the way?

Thanks!

Sounds really good Paul. The performances could use a lot of tightening up though, especially the guitar. Lots of late notes.

They all sound good to me, but maybe a little loose.

Snare seems to be a bit too drifty in level.

I think the heavy guitars could use a little taming in the high mids, but guitar sounds are about as fucking subjective as can be. I have this fairly loud on the monitors.

Singer reminds me of Gavin Rosdale, for better or worse.

Nice full production man. Solid tracking on your part. Mix is pretty well on too I think. Certainly full enough.

the heavier guitars sound too bright imop.. drums sound thin to me compared to the bigger guitars.. maybe if you lowered the guitars a hair and raised the bass volume it might help.. maybe boost the bass drum too..

I'll skip comments about the performance issues..

I'm listening on headphones, not monitors. Cool song. Guitars are nice and crunchy, love that. The bass sounds good too. Are you micing the snare? Or is it just your three mic technique?

like the sound...impressive sound...only think i can think of is I think a much tighter snare sound would sound awesome..IMO

tube, don't let these newbies show you up on review quantity, I know you have the pipes to download ... we need your experience, especially to review the newbies ...

:D

You guys rock !! Even though its on the heavy side you still kept it melodic which I personally like. Some would say the guitars are harsh but I like how they fit in the song itself. The production on the vocals is top notch and the overall mix is right where it should be.

Looks like its a toss with the guitars... they do seem a little harsh to me, though they do seem to fit the song to me, too. hard call, I would like to tone them down a little and maybe beef the snare some. I do like the mix a lot.

Studioviols- Pipes? You mean connection? It takes me an hour or so to get a whole 4 minute song most of the time. Thats why I dont do much listening of even uploading of my own here. Thanks for the experience remark, makes me feel a little bit respected :)

Fattmusiek- I'm using the 2 stick method on overheads, with a mic on snare, toms and kick. All the mics are gated cept the overheads. Gates are your best friend on a drum kit. When you compare it the top end suddenly sounds better.

Thanks Sluice... keep in mind its not my stuff or me playing, so as far as getting things tighter thats one the bands part, all I can do is ask for retakes, and when you ask too much people get a funny look and think you are trying to run the bill up. These guys are real cool though. I did get to play bass on one song, I'll try to get that up, its a whole different kind of song, acoustic guitars and stuff...

Jakearabble- what is a tighter snare sound? Thicker? bassier? Help me out here.

Thanks for the words, All....

Oh I know it's not you man. I said "they." :) But you've left me little to bitch about so I went for the band. LOL

Sorry, recording is fine--

The guitarist is pushing his amp too hard. To me, its just noise.

If that is the sound they want, you captured it well. --forget the static, I found a loose connection.

House of the rising sun :D

bass 'gentle-punches' mixed well.

Guitar has a nice civilized gnash too it ... and add a little yowl, but very tasteful ... really, I'm not kidding.

Vocal mixed on top, can understand all words on first listen, maybe challenged in a few spots.

That was my medium quality JamBox, now on cans.

Guitars maybe a bit to loud, vocal is sitting down in the mix, could be much more upfront, and that could be EQ on the upper-mids of the voice ... He's a soft mouthed hard throat singer, so there's not a lot of sibilance to be wary of, he can take some reverb and some upper-mid and presence boost.

I like the panning of the guitar at 3:00 and later at 3:19 to center, that moves us both ways ... and is REALLY effective to get us focused into the center when the vocal comes in shortly after that BRAVO well done ... where'd you learn that !, not on this board huh ! :D

You can overdo this auto-panning, BUT , if you do it EXACTLY the same way, everytime, with the SAME guitar ... it can be a hook. I don't like the Leslie at the end ... UNLESS, you double that track, and mix the Leslied track in the back about 30% volume of the regular track..

Great mix, good song ...

I look forward to your spreading your learning around here .

Listening on headphones and this thing rocks! All the levels sound good here. I love that bass.

Cool song too, but kind of "been there, seen that" ... but then, what isn't really? :D

Recording wise, this is excellent! Great vocals too!

:D
