They're stupid and have no business being around a kit. If you want flat drums, use the right heads. It's really easy. A head combo that gives a flat response is always better than the wrong head with tape and shit all over it. You can use 2-ply coated batters and coated resos and be flat as hell without having to tape wallets or teddy bears to the heads. If you want it flatter than that, sell your drums and kill yourself because you are a drum retard.

The point I made has nothing to do with what is and what isn't better {which, after all is a matter of opinion}. Let's assume for a minute, OK, two minutes, that the second quote above is entirely correct and no one in the present universe is allowed to or can remotely dispute it. It's still a moot point and irrelevant because in the words of the fella that has made the above indisputable statement

Personal taste is fine as long as it's good taste. Drums with tape and socks all over them never sound good. Ever. Since you wanna try to use my own words against me, let me clarify: Snare tuning is personal taste. Tune it loose, tune it tight, tune it however. As long as it's in tune and sounds like a snare, it's good. Have you ever laid a wallet on a snare drum? How about a towel? It sounds like shit, no matter how you tune the drum. Hell you don't even have to tune the drum, because once you lay a wallet on it, it goes to shit. You might as well beat on an empty suitcase. There's no need for that nonsense in this day and age of a million different heads and snares.

I usually like drier sounding snares so I tune them that way. I also like very responsive snare wires so I don't keep them as tight as most. I have many snares (including my old Slingerland from 1961 which I still use) and I have a few metal snares for when I need that sound. My favorite all round is a Yamaha custom birch with the wooden rims (it's fairly deep). I have snares of various depths and even a very deep snare 9" that gives me a great back beat for blues.
I don't like small snares and I don't own any piccolo snares. All of mine are 14" in diameter, but I do have one that is very shallow for certain effects. I like hardwood snares the best with at least 10 ply shells and very sharp 45 degree bearing edges. The only exception is my Slingerland which is that softer mahogany and it has a great sound for certain things.
I don't get a buzz from my snares, but then I've never tried smoking or snorting one of them.
