Another rough mix of a friends material. I recorded the live drums (Dave Morrison of the Ass Pony's played 'em... great guy) and did the mix. I didn't play anything on this 'un.

This mix has two common mistakes I've been making: the vocs are panned too far apart, and the mix is squashed too much in spots. I plan to fix that as well as try to get a bit more kick and generally more punch out of the live drums.

I had some limitations here. All the tracks except the live drums were recorded on a Fostex reel-to-reel 8-track. The levels on a lot of things were hot-hot-hot... I really wish I'd had some control during the original tracking. I'm working with a built-in stereo sound card (I know, I know), and most tracks have made two passes through my Mackie 1604VLZ (not the Pro) before even hitting the computer (the days of convoluted signal paths are almost behind me).

I'm sure there's plenty of mix improvements I _can_ control, though.

I like what you've done here. The whole tune is spacey feeling. I don't know if I like the delay on the drums so much. i wouldn't mind hearing a little more "crack" from the snare. I had a difficult time deciphering the lyrics, but that might be what you were going for. The mix is decent. You said that the vocals were panned too hard, but I didn't find that to be as bad as you made it seem. I liked it. Good job!

CMiller, I assume you're talking about the delay on the drum machine. There's a story behind that (if there wasn't, I'd have made one up anyway). He had that delay setting on another song and accidently changed drum patterns while fooling around. It was one of those "hey, you got your chocolate in my peanut butter" moments. He ended up writing the song as an excuse to use it.

I want more "crack" from most of the live drums, but the micing was minimal and I'm still learning. I think I can get it better than it is, though.

I think bringing the vocs more to the center (and some EQ) will fix some of the deciphering problems. He's not an amazingly consistent vocalist ;). Sometimes one vocal drops a bit or the other. With a less "wild" pan, his vocals seem to be stronger.

idrive accessible...agree with cmiller about the vocals and snare...this band has listened to a lot of Alice In Chains, huh...gibs
