hello,

i'm afraid i'm gonna have to ask another real basic question. I've got cubase sx 2.0 installed and everything, i can hear stuff plugged into my computer (guitar) and i can record it. trouble is, when i record a second track i get the first track recorded on to the 2nd as well.

so how do make it so that i can hear what i've already layed down, but only record the new stuff i'm playing?

i have a soundmax sound card is this shit?

Sounds like the soundcard is part of the problem. Cubase uses ASIO drivers, and I think the card you described is an onboard sound card, so it probably does not have any ASIO drivers.

I would check out something like the Audiophile 2496 which will give you 2 in 2 out and the ASIO drivers that you need to use Cubase.

Thanks,

I couldn't seem to find any useful information on the internet about my sound card. Is there a way to find out if my card has any ASIO drivers by looking in my computer?

Cheers.

If your card has ASIO drivers it should show up when you set up your devices in cubase. The instructions should be in the setup guide that came with Cubase.

I have never heard of your soundcard before, but if it is a soundblaster knockoff, look in your soundcard settings and there will be a setting that says something to the effect of "record (or process) what I hear", or something to that effect. Uncheck that box and you should be in business.

Hope that does it. It is a common question with soundblasters.

Howdy Huckpow, welcome to the bbs.

It sounds like all you need to do is change your cards mixer settings. Find where in the mixer you set the record options(if it has them) and change it from recording only the line in. I took a quick look at the cards performance charts and considering that the Live5.1 beats it, I'd say if your serious about recording music then you need to find another card. Keep in mind if you're going to be needing to record multiple channels at the same time then you'd need a card with as many inputs.

Well thanks very much everybody. I just tried recording in mono and I am able to do so without recording what i previously put down. So i guess my soundcard is just crap.

But their seems to be some other bugs going on, as the whole thing stops responding every now and then. I have windows xp, pentium 4 (2.80GHz) and 512MB of RAM. This should be good enough right?

That's plenty of computer power. If your getting crashes and glitches:

Did you buy the program or is it a crack?
Is your music computer used for other things like game playing?
Is your computer hooked up to the net, and if yes do you use virus protection?
Is your computer optimized for recording ala www.musicxp.net ?
Do you have the most current drivers for your soundcard?
Do you have the latest SX 2.2 update?

The answers to these questions will help figure out what the trouble is.
