is a "monitor subwoofer" really necessary?

Some brands will tell you that their monitors are designed to be used with a subwoofer. That may just be marketing though. I can think of one engineer I know who didn't like the sound of a particular 2 channel system without a sub, but loved it with the sub. Probably you just need to go and listen. The majority of people who are going to be listening to your music are probably just listening on 2 channel systems anyway. Unless you're mixing for a 5.1 system with a full LFE channel, you're not encoding any specific data to go the woofer anyway.

And besides, there are those who think even having a monitor with two speakers and a crossover is overkill.

Somehow, somewhere, someway, I wound up with a sub-woofer about as big as a nice low coffee table; I use it as a place to rest my large parrot cage and my parrot, ZORRO. It gives him a nice view of the outside world, as he overlooks the pond-water-reserve of my crib.

Guess you can use one if you get some effect or to affect some sound. But, I go along with RAK.

Summer is slipping by in the mid-west.
