what is this?
Okay, so I just gotta say this... I recently moved into an apartment, so I can't fire my amps up. I got my POD (XT w/the classic collection and metal factory installed) out the other night and started messing around, twisting some knobs. I have always tried to use it with settings based on the presets, with all the effects that they have pre-programmed as part of the preset patches. I switched it into manual mode, took all the effects off, even the reverb and, holy crap, the amp models actually sound halfway decent! Of course, this is my opinion but, holy hell, I actually got a nice sounding mix out of it. So, before you nay-sayers (who have every right, it's not the same as an amp, cab and mic) go all out against it, if you have one give it a try.

This is probably old news, sorry if you've heard this before!:D

I'd love to hear some samples...and someday i would love to have a pod myself.

I like the POD sim of an old Marshall, wicked clean, minimal reverb, played on a strat. It gets
that pinball wizard or Leo Kottke sound, on the dividing line between electric and acoustic, like a dreadnought with a magnetic pickup. I've had that sound programmed so long, I don't even renenber the settings. To me, it's just "Strat #1. It is also "Tele#2, good for fingerstyle. The Pod Pro isn't a really bad preamp, but you have to tweak it for quite a while to get good settings.. I use very, very few of the presets, like 4. Most have been sent to electronic netherland. I do a lot of work with modelers into clean, broad-spectrum amp and speaker combinations, then mic'd up to move some air. The Pod's limitations can be greatly reduced by involving real speakers and mics. The cool part is- You can do it it a greatly reduced volume level. This increases problems with ambient noise, and gating won't help. You either have to isolate the amp/speaker with an isolation box, and/or have a quiet room. I am lucky to have a quiet room. Good luck.-Richie

Yo JPX- Here are some samples from my album "Reunion". All electric guitar tracks were done with the Pod Pro 2.0, run into a Carver PM125 power amp, then to a 1X12 Marshall cab with a Celestion vintage 30, then mic'd up. This is an example of the technology in its infancy. I've gotten much better since then. Tracks # 6,9,11, and 12 use electric guitars. The rest is all acoustic with mics, no Pod.

Enjoy-Richie

PS- No, I am not trying to spam my album. It just happens to be where the clips are. If it bothers you, get over it.

I'm being serious here - I don't think I've ever used a preset on any piece of gear or plugin ever. The POD is no exception. First thing I did when I got one was switch it to manual mode and never turned back.

Presets on guitar processors are always reverb and delay laden to the point of being unusable.

the new pod x3 isnt at all. the previious pods were. yes. but the x3 presets are awesome.

I've got one and found "some" of the presets to be better than anything I've heard yet in modeler's. There's a rectifier preset in the X3 that finally doesn't sound like a swarm of killer bees on the lose. And the dynamics like pick attack have definately improved. That said, for me I've gotten the best sound by tweaking the preset to my taste. So far the X3 is the best modeler currently out there IMO.

oh, by far. its just as fun playing it with headphones, as it is with my atomic, now. they have increeased the quality of the amp models by alot. i'm impressed.

Other than the dynamics being improved, does the X3 come with any new amp models that you can't get on an XT with the upgrade packs? It looks like I have all of those from the classic collection and metal factory downloads... It just seems like the only difference between the XT and X3 is the fact that a)you don't have to worry about downloading the upgrade packs and b) it has an XLR input with preamp and compressor emulations.

yeah, but the dual tone feature is worth the upgrade alone, EVEN if it didnt have the model packs, and bass stuff. its just unbelievable what this thing is capable of.
