I just went into my favorite pawn shop - they had been selling a bunch of Realistic 33-922 dynamic mics (like this one: http://www.freedomguitar.com/description.php?II=15237&UID=2008123003380166.249.71.4 ) for $20 each, and they were down to one. They also had an Apex 435 sitting there for about a year, marked at $170 - way overpriced, but whatever. I noticed today that the 435 was on sale for $30. I asked to see both, and they asked if I wanted to test them -- um, sure - they dug around for a quarter-inch to XLR cord, and plugged in the quarter inch side to what looked like a guitar amp or a keyboard amp. The Realistic (dynamic) mic passed sound through the amp, and (I had to wince a little) the 435 (condenser) did not - I told them I could probably get the 435 to work (using my secret "phantom power" trick), so I was still interested. They had a Latin Percussion brand agogo bell on the wall, too - my agogo bell kind of sucks, so I made them an offer for the bell, the 435, and the Realistic - they went back to check, and started gathering up the "accessories" they kept in the back room - they rejected my offer, but came back with $50 "out the door" (i.e., including tax) - the "accessories" for the 435 was actually an Apex "SP1" kit, including the 435, two Apex 180 pencil mics with hypercardioid capsules, omni capsules for the 180s, and three shock mounts and wind screens (one for each mic) - sweet!!! I took it.

I'm not sure what I'm going to do with the Apex mics - the 180s pretty much look just like MXL 603s to me, except for the capsules, which isn't surprising since they're hypercardioid. I'll probably mod the 435 some. Maybe the 180s, too.

Anyway, I just thought I'd share another inspirational pawn shop story :D

I like to pull that one...I also have used the "this pedal doesnt work, but Im a tech" when there wasnt any plug in the input...I used that to pick up a Tech21 GT2, which is worth $250 for $20...I even bought a $2000 DLP projector for $100 because the Zoom was where the focus was and I convinced a counterperson it wouldnt focus and "If I have to take a screwdriver to this"...now I can put a projection of the lead singer up like a pink floyd show...lol.

Lol...nice. You guys have just inspired me to hit up my local pawn shop :)

$30 is probably about right for the Apex 435 used. I bought mine for $35 on eBay a couple of years ago. They're only $60 new. A $170 price tag on that is pure comedy. :)
