it's me again. the 13 year old engineer. here's one of my most favorite songs that i have every recorded. it's about 3 months old but, i'm just now getting my mp3 encoder to work.

i recorded it all on my fostex vf-16. all the effects came from the vf-16. i encoded it as a mp3 in cakewalk "pyro" software.

i recorded the guitars and bass direct. the vocals where recorded with a v-tech condinser mic that i bought at a music store for $55 bucks. i also used it to record the tamberine. the walls in my studio had "carpet pading" on them for acousitcs.

the drums where recorded with 3 mics( i think).the v-tech(overhead),sm57(snare) and the beta 52(kick drum).

the name is "come together" by the beatles.(i'm a big fan)

Hi Zeke,

I don't think I chimed in on your stuff yet, but I'm quite impressed. The fact that you are only 13 and even know that this classic music exists is amazing enough, but to have the interest, skill and taste to recognize it and be influenced by it gives me hope for the future of music :D
I think you've got a great start here (drums are awesome), others can give you better feedback on the technical aspects of your recordings. I just wanted to let you know, thanks for the breath of fresh air (on some old classics). Keep it up kid, you'll be going places. ;)

quite an impressive recording...........i have to say, MUCH better than your stairway recording......the vocals could probably use a little more compression..........you're 13, and you're not going to get a commanding vocal performance like lennon until your voice changes (this is not a bash, it's just human nature....your voice is going to change)......the music sounds great.......right now the only part that is weak is the vocal, and that isn't your fault...time will change that..........did you track everything yourself? what order did you lay everything down?

WELL DONE!!!

Wow, I'm not sure what I was expecting, but it wasn't this!!

You have a sophistication and level of understanding of the material that belies your tender age. There is complexity to the arrangement, accuracy in the playing, the proper homage to the masters, and yet a subtle and important injection of your own style! Most impressive!

There are one or two areas where you lost track of meter on guitar and bass, but not bad at all! The vox are a little bit saturated in reverb for my taste, and you missed some good opportunities to add the classic harmonies, opting instead for unison. But, that's subjective on my part.

All of this is minor, and is stuff that will come along with experience; and in your case, I should say that this will probably be a rapid process, because you already heave the heart and soul part down. That's the part that eludes some people forever. Technique is the easy part, that's just practice.

I must say, I'm very impressed with your work, and I hope you make this art a life-choice. You have the stuff that many only dream of, and you also have the rarer sense, at only 13, to know and appreciate what real music is. You're worlds ahead of where I was when I was 13, and I can prove it.

Visit my website at www.llarion.com. Listen to Dewpoint, my latest piece, then to compare, venture into the Listen section, where I have some material posted from when I was 13, playing with my best bud Mikey. Understand that it was 1977, and we didn't have 1/10th the technology back then, but it's interesting anyway.

Congratulations on a sweet piece!!!

Cheers,
Phil "Llarion: The Jazzinator" Traynor

yeap! i recorded allthe insturments. i recorded the guitars first, then the bass, drums, vocal, backing vocal, tamberine, organ and a scach bass track.

hey liarion,

killer drums man! do you think that i may be as good as you someday?

AHA!!!!

Zeke,

If I can give you one piece of advice about recording it is this:

You MUST have a solid foundation to work from rhythmically. As a drummer, this should be a natural thing for you, but it'll come.

ALWAYS put down a click track or even the whole drum part first. if you don't have a rhythm box in your keyboard, get on EBay and invest $100 in a small drum computer just to generate click tracks. You need to learn to play to them...

Now, do me a favor. Go get your parents and show them this thread. My wife and I want to have a word with them:

Dear Zeke's Parents:

THANK YOU THANK YOU THANK YOU for encouraging your son's formidable musical talents. Thank you for allowing him to be exposed to the classics of the rock and roll era, and keeping his young mind from being musically tainted and bastardized by the "boy band" pablum being spoon fed to us by the RIAA.

We hope that you continue to foster the development of Zeke's skills. He will be a great success if he continues to apply himself with the passion we've seen here to date.

My suggestion to you, dear Zeke's parents, is this:

Invest the $100 a year it would take to get him a domain name and a webhost with sufficient room to store his material. That way, he can develop a visual identity for himself as well as a musical identity. He'll need the marketing savvy early in the game. Also, if he has the web chops early, he'll have a marketable skill so he can earn a good living while he presses for musical success.

Go to www.godaddy.com and register www.zeke.com or whatever for $8.95 a year, and go to www.ipowerweb.com to get 200MB of space and 150 email addresses for $7.95 a month.

Please?

So there. :D

Cheers,
Phil

Thanks Zeke! :) Yes, you're going to be as good as me; in fact I wager you'll be at least 2x better than me by the time you're 16 years old. :)

A website is the easiest thing to do, and yes you can have a website even if you don't own a computer. It's easier if you have one at home with and internet connection though. I'm an artist by day and have made some websites (you can look at mine inmy post). I would be happy to help you out with something should you require the service. But you need a domain and webspace first, hook that up and then talk to me :D

Yep, it's just that simple..

You need three things to have a website:

1) a domain name registered.
2) a webhost to host the physical files
3) The ability to design/maintain said site, or you have to know someone who does.

I submit to you that there are enough web geeks around here that appreciate your talent that many would be willing to help out, myself included.

Good Job, Zeke!.

Suggestion:

Next time you do a cover, experiment a bit. Try to alter the style a bit, finding your own "voice". Nobody can beat the Beatles, so maybe try a different drum pattern, different groove, different instruments, yada yada.

Llarion is correct: drums first, click track if needed.

Talented young man, I hope I see you on the Pro circuit someday.

Fantastic Zeke!

Man after listening to the Stairway one I wasn't expecting a lot..

Excellent, very very damn impressive!

Nice job Zeke!

It's nice to see a fellow georgian getting into music at an early age.

You did a great job on this one!

How do like the Fostex? It's easy to use isnt it?I like it.

Thumbs up dude!;)

dang Zeke...for that fact the you came up with this...hobble off to the library to get on the internet. You get the gold star, young man. I hope your parents are good to you at Christmas and birthdays. ...nice "thank-you, thank-you" at the end too:p

dude, this is fucking awesome. no doubt about it...

i commented on your stairway..a while back..which, was kinda lame.

but, this is fucking awesome, as I said. I love your vocals man....you really try that lennon "push"...you did a good job with the delivery...and conviction of the singing. I love it. I was like oh man...i hope he doesn't butcher this song....

I think John would be very damn proud to hear something like this.

Your drums sound kick ass for the song (esp. toms...i also like the snare)

Your "shoop" sound is nice....the guitars are nice and crisp though possibly a TAD too "up front"...but thats a small issue.

all things considered I can't say anything bad about this. it moved me...I was fearing your vocals...you totally proved me wrong. you did the right thing with the reverb you choose.

Couldn't pay tribute to a great song any better myself.

You can stop saying you are 13 from now on - older people are gonna start pissed about their stuff ;)

hey btw Zeke - if you want to get into the website thing or whatever...and can't do what you need to from the library - I live in Duluth, GA...don't know where you live...maybe 200 miles but maybe 20 minutes. heh.

You're welcome to use my computers/broadband connection or whatever....or come over and bum a mic or something.

I mean that man, good luck.

Zeke,
thats defintely some great stuff, im blown away.
Your musical diversity is oustanding for your age.
The kik is right on and your high hats are crisp! ever heard the micheal jackson version? man, you pretty much put him to shame, maybe he'd be interested in a duo! I can see the headlines now... Jakson and 13 year old boy come together...
oh boy, maybe a little inappropriate for my first post here on the board, but i couldnt resist. Im working on some stuff of my own, but now im jsut a tad timid to put up a post, we'll see how it goes.

keep up the great stuff, love to hear another beatles cover, what else do you like, and do you have original songs?
excited to hear more
-austin
