Hey all,

First of all let me say I've been reading hundreds of posts concerning equipment, etc. so I'm not looking for specifics on that right now.

I'll try to make this short & to the point. Currently I'm the drummer in a 3 piece band.

Instruments are: guitar, bass guitar, & drums.

Current mics: 2 vocal & 3 for my drums-1 for kick drum, 1 for snare, & 1 condenser(overhead).

We also have a small 6 channel PA system.

Possible future additions: 1 more guitarist, 1-2 more vocal mics

Right now, no other equip. other than above, and this is what we want to do.
Priority one: Record the band for demo purposes. Either tape or CD(prefer CD) - Ultimately want to get any recording to my PC so I can burn it from there.
Priority two: Live performance. Any equip. for recording would need to be for live play as well.

I do not want a PC based recording system only. I/we need portability because our practice location does change & I don't want to have to haul a PC around with us. My thoughts are also along the lines of recording guitar(s) & vocals on their own tracks and then I would add the drum tracks later(at my house) instead of trying to record everything at one time.

I'm new to all this, so I really don't know the best route to go. I'm just shopping for ideas right now & seeking knowledge about it all.

Should we ONLY get a Roland/Tascam/Akai studio in a box deal? If we got one of these, do we also need a mixer? Funds (as usual) are an issue. We don't have thousands to spend at once, so I'd have to piece it together a little at a time. Some of those 'studio in a box' deals are $1500+. So that along with a mixer(if needed) would be to much at one time. To take a wild guess at the moment, I'd say I could probably spend $1000 - 1500 up front for the initial equip.

So that's about it. Any thoughts/suggestions/other routes to take are very much appreciated!!
