I don't want to be a troll (I've posted this on one other forum but haven't gotten very many replies), but I have to ask: can you really fix a dead spot?
I finally got a chance to sit down and record with my new Gibson LP Faded DC, and I was playing a passage that required an F# whole note (11th fret, G-string). The note had no sustain. None. The pickups (P-90s) are lowered 1/4" from the strings when depressed at the 22nd fret, all other notes on the guitar seem fine. But this is the deadest dead spot I've ever heard.
I restrung the guitar with a heavier gauge of string (11s) to give the neck a little more relief and see if it was just choking out (despite the fact that I couldn't hear any fret buzz). It didn't change. So, worried about the extra stress on the neck (I know, it's no big deal, but I might have to return the guitar) from the heavier strings, I tuned to Eb. Well, out of curiosity, I tried the note again. The dead spot wasn't on the same fret. It followed the frequency of the F#.
This is audio of me playing notes on that string. Info on the audio (quoted from my other post): Gibby LP Faded DC, both pickups on, all knobs on ten, playing from D (G-string 8th fret, tuned 1/2 step below standard) up past the dead note and back. Amp is an Orange TT set to pretty clean. The recording has been normalized for volume, but there's no noise gate or compression. Strings are brand new D'Addario 11s.
