Ok, you've got your $200-300 LDC mic, and you've got your decent $200-400 preamp.
You've probably found that you can get satisfactory instrument recordings like electric guitar, but that there is something that always sounds a little odd about your vocals.
Even though people have told you you can do great recordings with the gear you have (technique, etc.), you're now convinced you need that $2000.00 Avalon pre, and possibly a better condenser.
Yes, that will improve your sound, but I have a suggestion that my just push your vocal recordings into the area you want and without a lot of $$$ (I'm sure some people are about to say "duh", but I hope this helps others as sometimes the importance is overlooked)
What I'm talking about is an isolation booth or chamber. My brother just built one himself, and Holy crap, what a subtle difference, but it makes ALL the difference if you know what I mean.
For starters, yes he is using an Avalon Tube preamp, but he's just using a SPC1.
He showed me A/B comparisions with an without the booth, and having the booth just strips downs everything uneccessary about the vocals and let's it sit sooooo sweetly in the mix. It feels like it is engulfed in the mix, and floating on top now, instead of JUST kinda floating on top or behind. It gets rid of all the room reverbrations, and let's yopu be able to turn down the volume of the mix, and just makes it so part of it. It takes away any hollowness.
Anyway, try making one (some 2X4's, plywood and foam) before blowing all that money on more gear. It seriously just made the vocals croos the boundary from amateur to pro.
