NEW MIX: http://www.box.net/shared/z434c848lk

Hey guys!
Here's my new one called "Angels Fall", written with the help of many of you in a thread called "What am I talking about" in the Songwriting forum, but especially from RayC who wrote the verse with his awesome command of english (just don't ask me what hubris means...:D). Fast solo in the middle by Chris.

http://www.box.net/shared/epd08nba5k

and here are the lyrics, verse by Ray the rest by yours truly:

Angels Fall

Like the wings of Icarus
Angels dark and light
Rose on high victorious
They tumble into night
Sealing wax and stolen fletch
Can't construct a faith on lies
Hubris is the sun's embrace
Death's pain the angel cries

They will fall like a stone
And their cries will darken the sky
All will see their plight
The end of might
Angels fall
To the ground
The weak shall inherit the Earth
They will just fade away
No other day
When Angels fall

Would appreciate your comments!

Joey :)

Pretty cool song.

I like your guitar tone and that panning synth effect near the beginning.

Your vocals sound a little pitchy in a few places, which I'm pretty sure is something you don't want with this genre.

Elf metal is pretty much the greatest thing ever, so nice work there!

Not bad guys. I think the mix is clipping in some spots maybe? There's some weirdness that I can't quite put my finger on. The cymbal crashes starting at 5:12 sound strange. There's a little low end resonance going on too. I think it can be tighter down low. Some of the vocals are a little pitchy, but I already know you're metal singing badass so it's no big deal. :D

Guitars sound good. Cool riffs and licks and wanking. Good job overall guys.

Ok. This sounds like a mix of Meat loaf/Journey/Queen/ and your voice reminds me of David Bowie at certain points. It's a great song. I have no problem with the mix at all. Everything is fantastic! Really great! Two thumbs up!

-Adam.

Epic wank, in a good way! I haven't listened to stuff like this since high school. I think it sounds just fine, great job fellas.

If you don't mind me asking, how did you do that "swell" effect at the beginning? Very cool.

Matt

Thanx Steve!
The panning effect is the same guitar tone sampled backwards. :D
The pitchiness is a kind of tolerance level thing. I think in metal it's more about character than absolute perfection. Appreciate your comments!

Hey bro! You're definitely right about the low end. In fact I'm gonna redo the bass, 'cos I don't like the tone, it's too muddy. The cymbals need better definition too. I don't see any clipping in the level meters, but it could be a hit or something that's too loud in some spots. Do you find the pitchiness too irritating? The guitars are a mix of miced amp and GR sims this time. The sims give some good beef. Yeah the song ain't ready yet, but I knew that...;)

Thanx Adam! I'm an old school rocker, glad you like it!

Glad to refresh your high school memories, Matt!:D
No, I don't mind you asking about the swell effect, I like to share ideas. It's actually just one of the guitars I recorded and sampled backwards. I like to do stuff like that. Thanx for the comments!

Joey,
I'd forgotten about that thread - life's been to full of mere mortal things, no angels wings just scorpion stings - so I'm uber impressed to see my silliness wrapped in a cloak of guitars and on a throne of solid metal.
Wow, your voice is in its place isn't it!
Cool, thanks for making my Friday arvo.
Oh, and monster metal music to make the pick of destiny weep & TD seek your holy toenail clippings!

Ha, ha, scorpion stings...now there's a new theme for lyrics:D, we'll have to keep that in mind ;)
Your verse sat so well with the riffs, all I changed were a couple of insignificant things to please the phrasing. Otherwise it was perfect and I'd really love to write more stuff with you. I've always loved the prose in your songs (guess being a teacher ain't all that bad, no...?;):D)
Hope this sounds better when I've redone the bass and fixed the cymbals.
Until then, the angels shall continue their fall from grace........:D
Thanx for all your help, Ray!

Do you find the pitchiness too irritating?

No, not at all. I only really noticed it because your stuff is usually so spot on. I had to back up the player and do a double take to make sure I wasn't going crazy. It's not bad though. Don't worry about it. It's rock and roll! :)

Joey - I forgot to mention that the part I LOVE best about this track is the riff guitar before the outro - the Queen I & II type raw rock one. REALLY cool sound.
THe rest is fanmazing & I'm looking forward to you redoing the bass to get that Decay style definition & tone.

Enjoyed listening. The lyrics have an epic feel. Hot guitar.

The mix is a little boomy on my system in the lower mids. And yeah, the vocal's a sometimes pitchy but the feel is great.

There's some serious guitar playin' in this tune. Pretty impressive. I don't really listen to this genre much, but the recording is top rung and the guitar licks make it well worth the listen.

Thanx man!
Yeah it is boomy and I've recorded the bass track again now. Hope to have a new mix up later. I'm getting worried about the pitchiness, so I might just record the vocaöls again. Any clue which parts sound irritating? Thanx for the comments!

Thanx GZ! Appreciate your comments! ;)
Mix has to be better though....:)

Wow guys...pretty impressive.....great guitars!!!!!!! This is epic, totally gets a Brina May vibe at times with the harmony guitars.....the fast solo is awesome...fit perfectly...this kind of reminded me of the stuff off of Yngwie's 1st couple of solo albums that had vocals...thumbs way up to all involved!!

Ok, here's a new mix:

http://www.box.net/shared/z434c848lk

Replayed the bass, worked on the cymbals a bit, fixed some levels....
Don't think I'll be recording the vocals again. They have a feel that I don't want to lose. I think except for the second line in the verse everything else sounds "acceptable". But even that line has a certain hysterical feel that I like. Don't know, I'll let you vote on that....
Thanx to all of you! :)

Man I love hearing stuff like this. Reminds me of crusin and getting stoned listening to MSG. Good rock is still around !!!!!!!!!

On a second listen (to the new mix), the pitchiness isn't so bad. Most elf metal vocalists sound more like Kamelot than Excalion, so it took me two listens to get used to it.

The guitars and the rest are still quite awesome.
