We're finally ready to start building. I just started yesterday and already have a couple of walls up including my $100 dual payne sliding glass door for the iso booth. Here's a pic of the progress.
It's a bit hard to see what's going on but the pics will get better as things start to take shape. I appreciate all the help and insight from everyone who has contributed to this forum.

Cool Rush!!!

It's a long road..... :(

:D :D :D

I know.... everytime I think about all the little things that have to be done, I picture myself being around 60 when I'm finally finished! :D

$100 dual pane sliding glass door?

Where the hell did you find such a thing? Everything I saw in home depot was 250+ for something that wouldn't fall apart by sneezing on it.

frederic, you have to look at the clearance section for that department. They have a rack (in my area anyway) where they put special orders gone bad, or disco'd items. They have it marked down about half of the original price but you can talk to the manager and strike a deal with him or her. I've done that for any construction project I've ever done. You'd be amazed at how much they'll let the stuff go for. Especially paint. If you need a gallon, they have some for under $5. Peaple return it and they can't resell it so they disco it. Try it next time you buy something there from clearance.

Really? Wow, I'm going to take a run to the three home depots near me then, because I've deliberately designed glass doors OUT of my vocal booth because of the pricing I was faced with.

I'm happy to design the booth around the door, so an off-standard size is just dandy, makes no difference to me.

Thanks for the tip! I wonder if the Lowes near me does the same, I'll have to slide by there too.

Thanks for the tip!

Double pane, exterior grade, sliding glass doors aren't cheap.
I'm paying about $600 a piece for mine.
I need 5 of them. :(

But there's a certian look I'm going for too, and a hodge-podge of 5 mis-matched doors isn't it. :p

Buying them at discount is a great idea if you only need one or two.

I was very lucky! When I set out to look for the sliders, I knew I didn't want a 6' door and I didn't want the white frames in the window itself. I got to Home Depot and there were about 4 of them, all 5' with no inner frames. There were others that were one of a kind but these were all disco'd. When I asked the guy why thery're all being cleared out, he said that people don't want the aluminum frames anymore. He said they leak too much according to people.

Frederic, I beleive I've done the same thing at Lowe's. Another great find I had a Home Depot was a solid core door originally $96. The manager let me have it for $35 because it had a small chunk taken out of the edge. The deals are out there! I promise.

Being that my studio is tiny in comparison to yours, I only need one actually - for the vocal booth. My original design (until I saw the doors were $600 a pop) was to angle it so it leans 6" out at the top of the vocal booth, to make the angles non-square inside. easy entry way, AND I can see through the glass.

I've done so many things wrong in my studio at this point a weird door wouldn't be a problem :-D

I *am* suprised, very suprised, how this room sounds with the tunes blasting, standing outside. Its very quiet. Also inside, I do have some standing waves, but most of that goes away when I place the monitors where they will be in the final configuration, its pretty cool. I thought for sure I was going to get hosed with waves and node problems. I can fix most of this with foam, and one slatted resonator on the back right of the room in the cove, I think.

Now that I have a router, a compound miter saw and a few other cool tools I can do some clever construction for those type of structures.

Anyway, I'll stop since i'm off topic, again.

Frederic,
I am an idiot sometimes (nobody say a word! )..... The sliding door was purchased at Lowe's.... not Depot. But usually I get my deals at Depot. I have both stores across the street from one another in my city so I get confused sometimes.
Both stores will have these deals though. Otherwise, they're stuck with and the manager doesn't want that.

Rush, you should if John will host a page for you to show off your progress.
I'm sure he will, just ask him.
It's nice to go back and look at them, particularly as you progress.

Michael,
Thanks for the tip. I've emailed John.

With the help of Mr. Sayers, I've redone my design. John's way improved damn near everything about my set up. I got more space in both rooms and the potential for cop calling is less than it was with my plan.

Bottom line....John Sayers is a bad ass!

I've already taken down what I started and rebuilt the iso booth, the entryway, and one angled control room wall.

Angles are a bitch!

Here's the new plan,
John

and here's the iso from the control room view point.

Will someone please convince me that I DON'T need a control window! Please!

In the words of the eternal John Sayers:
"Welcome to the world of angular construction!"

Damn Michael.... that's some intense framing. I'm happy that mine is not as ellaborate! ;)

Your studio is gonna be great when it's finished. I can already tell by just what I've seen so far in combination with you attention to detail.
