Ancient Ribbon Mic

B&K is awesome. Used them at the acoustics department of the university. Some were used to measure the noise pattern of a chimney. It hung down in it while working (both chiomney and mic). And I remember taking apart the body of one to disconnect the heater inside the body (it is there to prevent condensation) because it prevented us from cooling below -40ºC. They can take some abuse.

As far as the creases go. I can not say for sure on your mic, but I have a old sure ribbon that is sig zagged from top to bottom.
I am pretty sure mine is shot. If you blow softly on the ribbon it flops to a bowed position on the opposit side. that and the fact that when you do it from the front it ends up resting on the fabric screen. I thought about trying to loosen the clamps and pull it taunt, but the end of the ribbon that I wanted to grab was so fragile it broke right of. This thin is like handleing really thin gold leaf.

The creases are for stiffening the ribbon, and one should NEVER blow on a ribbon mic.

Reslos

Yes it will work!! I know a fewlla who did just that and told me how great it was,.He used RCA 77s or 74s but the idea is the same.Reason im telling you this is that he mods reslos and makes them sound fantastic.Check him out.He does some great things with Rode Class2s also..ask him.His site is

Freudian Slip...send that thing to "Pat" he will bring it to life.He recently bought up many yards of "lite" ribon.He did my RCA 74s with the lighter ribbon and now they sound more like 44s which are about twice the price i believe...
I bought my 74s for 1500 the pair.They are 50 years old and weigh a ton...BUT WHAT A SOUND.My friend didnt want a "50 year old mic" so she bought one of these new and expensive ribbons.....NO COMPARISON!!There aint nothin like the real thing ..at least in this case.To build a mic the way these RCAs are built today; would cost a fortune..They were a steal at $750 a piece!!I could sell em for alot more but i plan on being buried with em he he he......joe
That said:Reslos are nice if you get the right model which escapes me at the moment....is there an R-12???Ask Pat...i'de like a couple meseff

Hey, Tanberg! Love the "Pat's Schematics" site! The man's obsessed and, God knows, we need more like him.

I actually got to use the Reslo "in anger" last night. We've decided to start on recording our first CD and once the guide tracks were down we decided to record some guitar, so I dug the Reslo out, plugged it into my JoeMeek VC6Q and stuck it in front of my (late 50's) Watkins Clubman.

Our guitarist's SG has never sounded so good. As soon as he started playing, the sound was there in the cans. All I had to do was press "record". Wonderful. Especially considering the combined age of the vintage stuff we were using is in the region of 100!
