AnandTech.com is doing a series of articles of suggestions for parts to build PCs. This week's might be particularly helpful, since many people here have been looking to build mid-range systems. Keep in mind that YMMV, and that they're just suggestions and won't necessarily apply to your specific recording needs. In particular, these systems are not built around being quiet; supplementary research should help you discover quiet alternatives where they're needed. Still, this article gives a good basic guideline if you don't know where to start.
