analog to digital via Firewire device

I need to get my Mac G4 set up to do quality voice recording, as well as acoustic stringed instruments. I've set up some Shure SM-58s running into a Mackie 1202 mixer. The mixer main outs go to a Sony DVMC-DA2 digitizing device, which I've used to digitize video. The digitizing device runs into the Mac via Firewire.

I'm trying to record to Peak. I don't get an input signal. I'm trying to decide whether to debug this setup or invest in a dedicated sound card. Any suggestions?

Are you able to use Peak to record the audio portion of the videos you've worked on? I suspect Peak might not have a way to see the Firewire data coming across as something it should care about. The Sony, no doubt you have some kind of capture application that can talk to the port (or a driver for Premiere or whatever video-editing app you are using).

Here's what you can do -- use the Sony capture utility, or do whatever it is you do when you capture video. Then export the audio to an aiff file and then you can open the file in peak. A little more cumbersome, perhaps, but it's better than buying another $1,000 worth of gear...

Check with the Sony folks and see if they have some way to use the input from their device more directly in audio Mac applications... they might have something or soon will..

Firewire input for audio recording

Thanks for the good feedback. It never occurred to me that while my video editing app (Cinestream from Media 100) is FireWire savvy, my audio apps might not be. Wonder if there are Firewire-savvy audio apps out there.

Firewire audio recording update

Just to let you know, I tried recording audio through Firewire using the Capture mode in my video editing software, and it works beautifully.

Until I want to do multitrack recording and mixing ($800 for a Digidesign product, according to Full Compass), this should do the trick.
