I'd like to send my minidisc to the computer as digital but the recorder only outputs analog. I've seen a Dayton analog to digital converter advertised that is supposed to do that conversion. Anyone use one of these? Any general advice about this? I have a tendency to cheap out...would it be better to wait and save and buy a minidisc with a digital out?

What you are describing is a "soundcard" :) What kind of minidisc recorder is it and what are you using it for?

It is possible you could get away with something as cheap as a Soundblaster Live or Audigy. Above that you'll find something like the m-Audio Audiophile which has great converters at $150.

Thanks! Lucky there's no harsh punishment for dumb questions by the new and unclued (on this BBS at least).

I'm using a Sharp MDSR60S mindisc recorder.

To house a soundcard, I have a Dell Dimension 4500 running XP and some kind of basic system sound, not a card (a line in, a mic, a speaker out).

I notice Dell sells the Soundblaster Audigy MP3+, Audigy Gamer, Soundblaster Live, and Soundblaster 512 PCI, also a Santa Cruz PCI card. Some of these are only 16-bit. I wouldn't buy it from them necessarily but I assume that by selling these they are also telling me they are compatible with their stuff. Compatibility problems are my favorite nightmare. Any of those the obvious best choice for making reasonable CD-quality demo-type stuff? I could stretch to the m-Audio if it was that much better than the lower priced stuff. What do you think?
