I have a real simple question, how do I take analog recordings , put them on my pc, and turn them into mp3's, or at least into audio files I can burn onto cd's? I have been recording for years, multi-tracking, etc., I have great gear, reel to reels, tube mics, compressors, but I want to get into the cd recording thing, as I have this new dvd burner, but I was asleep that decade when computer recording came into vogue. I will eventually get into the whole pc-based recording scene, but for now I just want to transfer my mixes to cd I can play in my car.

Well there is a couple of ways that you can do what you want. You can connect your tape player to your line in on your computer(NOT RECOMMENDED) and download Goldwave www.goldwave.com and use that. Or another way is to go out and buy DVD Xpress(about $100.00US) . This plugs in to USB and allows you to take an analog signal and digitize it to your hard drive. I use Media Player 10 to burn the cd. It's free and does a good job and includes volume leveling.

Are you talking about video?

You can use Freeware CDEX to record analog input
SAVE AS --- WAV, MP1, MP3, MP3, ogg, plus others. No further conversion required.

I personally prefer to record analog as WAV. ( 44.1K )
I'll then use CDEX to Convert from WAV to Compressed Audio ( again, many formats including MP3 @ 192K) Find file, highlight, then press F11.

For jam tracks, I'll convert them to MP3. You get loud, it's all distorted anyways, who cares ...
For serious recordings, that I don't want anyone to have a "clean" version, I give them MP3 at 128k or lower.
