Can get an AD/DA converter that has 4 analog inputs, and then go from the digital out to a digital soundcard with toslink or s/pdif with 4 tracks simultaneously into my recording software? I have $250 as my top budget. Could this work instead of a comparably-priced soundcard with a breakout box or something simmilar? Thanks...

Oh yeah.. I don't need midi, but want 24/96...

I think the Tascam 428 might do it for you. I just saw them for about $250 new too, forgot where, maybe Musicians Freind?

As far as I know, SPDIF supports only 2 channels. That would defeat the point of having 4 analog inputs.

Just get an M-Audio Delta 44 and be done with it.
It's not exactly what you're asking for but it fulfills your recording needs nicely, for the price you're willing to pay.
