They are a cheaper alternative to the pricey Intels. I've been using AMD's for years and never had a problem with them. Some folks will name some drawbacks to them, but they are just splitting hairs. (Yes, they are a bit lighter in performance because they are cheaper.) You may see speed differences when doing certain tasks such as encoding large video files or calculating the space shuttle reentry trajectory. But when doing basic studio recording, you'll never notice those few missing milliseconds.

As long as you cool them properly and use a stable power supply, then generally speaking, they can do everything that the Intel's can do.

FYI...
I understand that AMD will soon release a new cpu design called "The BullDozer" that reportedly will blow-away all hyperthreading cpu's on the market. But I am sure that Intel will answer it with yet another new design. And the beat goes on...

I have an AMD quad core in my latest HP computer and use it for recording all the time. Works great. I recorded a band last night with 15 inputs in use and not a stutter all night. It just seems to work.

Using a 6 core AMD with 7 ultimate, Guitar Tracks Pro 4---works awesome for me! Highly recommend:)

I have the same setup except I use Acid Pro. I use all kinds of other labor intensive software for work and it holds up perfectly fine. If you run like 5 cpu intensive plugins at the same time you will probably notice a glitch.
