I was flipping the channels and stopped on the country video station because I wanted to see what mic the cowgirl was singing into.

It was an AKG D-112.

Would it make a good vocal mic?
Is it just an old cowboy trick that the rest of don’t know about?

I have read of people using it for a voiceover mic but not vocals.

BTW she was also in the middle of a cornfield singing.

Interesting! I am sure you could use one for vocals. I have seen many people sing thru senheiser 441's so why not a D112. It has a prescence peak at 4k so i am sure brightness would be sufficient.............I have one so maybe I will try it just for kicks ;)

mics in videos are picked because of how they look. they are just stage props so i wouldn't count on the actual song being recorded with it. But, you never know, they might have used it.

i think mike doughty (that's probably the wrong spelling, but the singer from soul coughing) used to use one in the studio a lot.

not really sure about that actually, just something i heard. but if you listen to his vox, a lot of them don't sound like a typical LDC.

i think the 441 was designed as a broadcast mic.

Yeah, if it was a video, I wouldn't trust it. I saw some assclowns on vh1 the other day singing into the end of a side address condenser. Looked pretty goofy, but I guess the prop guy/gal & director didn't know much about mics.

i've seen this before, it's funny :D

...

back in the day when my band used to open for sum 41 before they hit it big, their singer used to use a d112 all the time. he said it was to make his voice sound more bottom heavy. occasionally he'd tape a 57 right next to it to get a different texture

i saw it too

Just saw that same video...the mic even had a cable hooked to it...I think the name of the song was "Corn Fed" or something.
The mic was a prop ... but we had a drummer that used an old square AKG D-112 for live vocals. His voice was very high and bright and the mic gave it some bottom-end depth.

there was a NIN video and trent reznor was singing into a d-112. i seen stevie ray singing into a senn 409. i guess whatever works.

d-112

I know you knew the mic was a prop.

The corn field kinda gave it away huh?

Timbo,
Never a D112, but I've used an ATM25 and an 868, both low-end mics, kind of.

i used a d-112 on a vocal track one time, nothing important, i was just messin around. I had a hard time gettin any kinda bright up-front vocal sound from it but it did sound kinda cool when i ran it through a distortion pedal. made a nice kinda hard rock sound, how ever when im really working on somethin, i choose to leave it infront of the kick ;) lol

The D-112 is pretty cool to use for a doubled vocal part---gives the double a kinda airy sound. think elliott smith/Iron and Wine thingy.....that is if you get real close to the mic
