Univalve & Avatar Speaks
I would appreciate any suggestions on my set up with this little accoustic snippet/intro. I'm working in a new room and trying to "get along" with a new microphone. I've listened to this and the rest of the tune about a hundered times...at first I didn't like it but the sound is growing on me...I don't know...

Please have a listen and let me know what you think.

Thanks.

Thank Massive

I've had the mic for awhile actually...just haven't done much with it...It's an MXLV69. Placed it 2' high above the guitar...shooting down on the bridge slightly toward the sound hole to avoid the body sounds. The room is a 25'x25' by 20'+ tall room (a little ambiance). Just a touch of compression and a hint of EQ to clean out the bottom end rumble.

Can you elaborate on the "falls apart in mono" thing? Not sure what you mean by that. You don't thing there's too much "room" sound?

I appreciate the listen...if this is good place to start, I'm looking to re-take the tune and get the accompay flautist coming in early next week...I kind of dig the sound for accoustics...just looking for some input.

Thanks,

There are phase problems... Assuming there are two mics being used, or there's a delay of some sort between the tracks.

When you put it in mono, it collapses more than it should. If you're in a DAW, you could put it in mono and just nudge one track (we're talking several milliseconds tops) until it sounds nice. Then, just open it back up and you should be golden. :D

Thanks John...I see what you mean. I appreciate you taking the time...

Yes.....

Assuming it was recorded mono with the one mic, it sounds like you did the ol' double the track and stereo delay'd it 20-30ms trick. Or, you offset the two tracks by that much and panned l/r. I didn't try it in mono, but yeah, it sometimes does not hold up. Try mic'ing with two mic's (listening for phase trouble as you track) and then delay'ing one by 20ms and panning l/r. Can sound super rich and full. I'm hearing the "room" also -- short first reflections. May want to deaden that a little -- just my personal taste. Nice tones, tho.

Thanks Konna

Good ears...you hit it right on...single mic...a little doubling and delay. I appreciate the listening. I'm still getting used to the new room...after some of the comments, I listened a little more closely and I now too hear the room...especially during the tail end.

Thanks again.
