What is the best amp for about 400 dollars, that is solid state and comes close to a tube sound? Around 80Watts Rms.

Some suggestions...

Marshall AVT50 Combo: It's not 80 watts, but it's waaay loud for only 50. Has one tube in it, so it's kind of a cross-breed. Two channels - clean and overdrive w/footswitch. I have one and I love it. :)

Peavey Bandit: Built like a tank and sounds great for a solid stater. This one is also 50 watts, though.

Peavey Trans-Tube: I used to own one of these. It's a 100 watt 2-12 Combo with 3 channels and a footswitch. Sounds great, but weighs a friggin' ton! If you're young and strong, you won't mind the weight, I guess. This amp is soooooo loud that it will bust out all the windows in both you and your neighbors house! I got tired of lugging the thing around, so I sold it and got the AVT50.

Line 6 Flextone III's (II's aren't bad if you find one not abused). To tell you the truth, I'm very partial to my Spider now that I've found out "The Secret". :)

I've grown to dislike my AVT. There's just no replacement for real tubes in a guitar amp.

i agree with tex-

you'll find a nice sound, with a solid state.....
and then, you'll want something a little more tube-like!
LOL

seriously, some people love the sound and feel of a solid state.

and that's one thing.

but if you like the sound of tubes, and the feel/sag of tubes, then you'd be better off saving up, and get something closer to what you'll ultimately be happy with.

if you're only going to have one amp, don't put up with a compromise.

at least get a little closer.....

you'll need double what you got...just for a head..

i mean, that's like asking "what can i have, that's close to sex?"

;)

How about the Fender Cyber Twin?

I got a cyber twin for my studio and I dig it. The novelty of the thing is still pretty cool. I basically just roll through the presets.
I think I posted a link to all the flavors in my S&J's Sleepwalk thread if you want to learn more about it.

you can find a good used tube amp that is loud enough to play witha band for about what you want to spend.......it's gonna have to be a combo obviously.

The VOX is cool. Do you have one?

I have a Vox AC30, but a few other AC30 users I know have spoken pretty highly of the Valvetronix. I think it would be worthy of a test drive. Why do you want a solid state amp?

A couple brands you should look at if you're dead set on getting a solid state amp is Carvin and Tech 21. Carvin may be the best bang for your buck around.

I like the tone on both of the amps you suggested. But the annoying buzz of Fender tube amps really sucks when you try to record, and it annoys the shit out of the crowd between songs when you play live.

OK

This is what I want.

I am going to go Tube.

I want something that is GREAT clean, because I have a Boss DS-1 pedal that I love, and Boss Flanger, and delay, and WAH.

For clean I will use my Strat, and with my Boss Ds-1 I use my Les Paul Standard.

I don't care about an overdrive channel.

I need something that is good for recording, has XLR outs. And I can gig with. That will cut through the band. 50 to 100 watts.

What do I get?

You ain't gonna get a super-clean, non-buzzing, killer-sounding tube amp for $400 bucks... that's for sure.

From what you describe as your "wants", you should be looking at a Mesa Boogie Nomad-55 Combo. It's easily the most versatile, best-sounding amp out there in it's wattage range.... and could easily keep up with any other manufacturers 80 or 100 watt amp, without a doubt!

The bad news is that it costs more than twice what you've got to spend. The good news, though, is that you'd never have to buy another amp ever again... guaranteed.

If you buy a $400 amp, you'll be trading it in or selling it at a loss within two years. Then, you'll want to buy a Mesa Boogie anyway, once you've tried it.

Why spend your money twice and lose a few hundred bucks when you can get the right amp the first time?

50-100 watts?!?!?!?!?!

Rubbish.

That Blues Jr. is plenty to gig with even at only 15 watts. Anyone who tells you differently has a small dick.

Sorry, I know I will have to spend 1000 dollars.

But I was looking into a Nomad, I think it covers everything pretty well.

Tube Amps that have great clean sounds under $1k:
Mesa Blue Angel (used - they're out of production now)
Vox AC30 reissue (used)
Fender Vibro King (used - you'll have to look pretty hard to find one under $1000)
Dr Z ? (used)
Top Hat ? (used)

Those are what I would look at. I wouldn't worry about XLR outs for recording. If you want a great sound you'll mic the amp anyways. Most amps over 22 Watts will be loud enough to play with a band.
