well, I'm in the market for a new amplifier, I want something with very, very good distortion. I'm thinking either orange or mesa boogie, any specific models or other brands? any suggestions would be appreciated. this will be used live quite a bit.

Those amps are quite different. Its as easy as Orange=Vintage tone and Mesa=Modern Tone. So it depends on what you're looking for.

If you have a high budget, the Mesa Road King seems to do about anything. Do some reading on it. It has two seperate power amp paths with different tube types, and has a ton of features. Its got me very interested in a Mesa for the first time ever.

If you want straight forward great rock tone, the Orange amps are hard to beat. Look for the dual channel models with reverb if you want the most versatility.

I use an ENGL Thunder 50 Watt Valve combo.
Superb sound and very loud if you want it.
It has one clean and a lead channel with extra boost.
Can handle everything from smooth jazz to out and out thrash.

I love it :D :D :D

Basic questions are budget and size??? The best amp for $300 is much different than the best amp for 3K.

Where do you plan to use it, what will drive it, and what will it complete with (other band members)?

Soldano's sound pretty amazing but if your on a little smaller budet im in a band with a sound like i dunno a mixture between alice in chains and smashing pumpkins and the guitarist sound is amazing...he uses a gibson standard double cut through a JCM2000 and it is really powerful.

Look into the Gen-Benz El Diablo. Does a lot of thing VERY nicely. Hughes & Kettner make some good sounding gear as well. Can't go wrong with a Mesa Dual Rectifier if you want very good distortion. Hell, a Mark IV will knock large goats out of your path.

I freaking HATE Soldanos. Ive owned 2 of them. I only bought the second to see if I was wrong about the first, but I wasnt. I hate those things. Talk about a "can of angry bees" distortion. Thats exactly what they are. Avoid at all costs.
