The Ampex Ag440 family of tape recorders have a separate electronics module for every channel being recorded. That is: a 2 track deck will have two, a four track 4, etc...

The electronics boxes include discrete amps for recording and playback and there is an input transformer that you can get to modify it to be a mic pre.

I have one of these decks and was wondering if anyone here had done the mod and what the results were. Did it sound OK? It seems like a cheap way to get an extra couple of mic pre's...
