Amp Popping???

Ok I have a laney VC30 and I quite enjoy it. It's a tube amp so I know it's sensative. But about 6 months ago it started crackeling and popping. I took it back to the place where I bought it and they replaced a tube. This put a stop to the crackeling but the amp still pops.

This is really frustrating because when I want to record I end up getting a pop in the middle of the song.

Any ideas of what could be doing this.

I took it back and the guy soldered the input jacks because he said they were loose and then he said he couoldn't find anythhing else.

BUT IT STILL POPS!

Cheers.

Can't help you there, but my old Peavy Databass likes to just turn off randomly. It's been repaired a couple times, but still does it. Is there another repair place that you can have look at it? It's easy for someone to miss something, but if more than one person looks at it, then it's more likely to get spotted.

I have a Laney 30W tube, although not that one, and I had the same problem. It was out of warranty so I took it to someone who specialised in amp repair and they replaced the power tubes and it was fine. Now it's making a slightly different sound occasionally and I've traced that to the Lo input jack - strangely enough the two things you've had done to your amp...

The answer is that "couldn't find anything else" is not an acceptable answer - if it's popping and they can't fix it, they should refund your money, or pay to get it sent somewhere that understands how amps work and get them to have a look at it.

Go back and hassle them. Good luck.

It sounds like arcing in the power tubes to me. This can be bad news for the output transformer; you need to get to the root cause and fix it. If your tech can't cut it, get a new tech.

I had a similar problem with a Marshall tube poweramp 100/100. I think just about every component in the damn thing was replaced and it still never worked right. There were a couple of times I thought the tubes were going to explode. I ended getting a Mesa Boogie Strategy 500, 200/200. No problems since. ;)

The guy said he'd send it away to Laney if The problem still occured. Its out of warrenty now but he's going to tell them he tried to rerpair it whilst it was under warrenty.

It really sucked when I first took it in they gave me the "It's a kid" approach.
"What cables you using?"
"Dimazios I got from you guys 2 months ago."
"Oh"

Allright.

Cheers guys.
