Amp Miking? Worthless

What would you do if someone told you that miking your amp for recording is stupid, and for low-quality studios? Not only would this fictional character say all that, but he would also lay claim that no professional record was done with miked guitar amps.

Now I know some people go directly to their preamps or recording consoles or line-outs on their amps, but many if not most recordings use miked amps, am I correct? Post as many replies as you can!

I will be the first person among dozens to say how insanely stupid this person must be. He must not have the first idea how records are actually made. I would guess that a full 2/3s of the guitar sounds recorded in professional studios are created by mic'ing the guitar amp.

Let me be the second. This guy is obviously a frickin idiot for saying such a thing. Just about every engineer I know dismisses using direct boxes or simulators unless they're chasing after a very specific sound that they know they can't reproduce with a miked cab.

Yeah, I'd like to see what happens when I plug my Soundelux U97 into my RNC before hitting my Great River. My GR will be much happier this way

Oh, since I only play acoustic, I bet the original guy also claims that the only way to record a great acoustic sound is to use the built in pick up. Mics must be for losers! Who wants my Soundelux and Neumann?

darrin, your other joke played out pretty well. I fell for it. However, this one was more subtle.




Speaking of going direct, we once plugged a balanced 1/4" ended cable into our singer's butt because our mic was out for repairs. However, he squirmed around too much from the phantom power and the vox ended up a little muddy.
