OK people... I've been reading about home recording from "Home Recording for Musicians for Dummies" and although the title is degrading the book really does have a lot of valuable information. Anyway...

Jeff Strong, the author says you can get Mic Simulator plug ins if you have a cheaper mic to mess around and see if you can get a better sound. I can not find a single one online! Weird.

Also I'm looking for a good possibly free Amp Simulator. I know Steinberg makes Warp and there is a couple others I probably can't afford but either way... If you know of some good ones or have used Warp I would apprecaite some feedback.

Thanks!

The mic modelers are kind of fun to play with, but they do not turn your $100 mic into a $6,000 mic. You could accomplish the same thing with eq. Antares makes the only one I know of.

There are plenty of guitar amp modelers, but I don't know if any of them are free.

The Antares mic modeler is excellent.

It's very useful in situations where you need to drop in for part of a track, but don't have access to the mic you recorded the track with originally.

I wouldn't want to use it over a whole track personally as I feel it introduces the odd artifact - but for short passages it can be very useful.

Obviously it can't turn an SM58 into a U87 - but it's quite amusing to hear it try. It also has quite a nice distortion effect built in :)

Thanks alot! ;)

Any others I'm still looking. I want to play with some mic simulators/ modelers so if anyone knows of a free one. That'd be real cool.

It's not free, but Line 6 just came out with the Tone Port. It's a software based amp and pre modeler but with a hardware interface. The 2 port is about $199. I just got it and love it.

free modeler

MDA Combo is the only free amp modeler i know of:
http://www.mda-vst.com/

it's not very flexible, but there are a handful of textures to choose from. i'm not sure if it's available on its own. you may have to download their entire suite of effects to get it. they're free though, and some are usable if you don't have a lot of effects already.

good luck,
marcus
