.
i have a room that i built in my garage where i record. when i built it, the intent was to have a place to play my acoustic and write some songs. that was a lot of years ago and it has gotten way out of hand. rebuilding a multi room studio is NOT an option.

i have a little space next to this room where i'd like to be able to put my amp in so i don't have to have it in the same room as the computer. i'd also like to build it to be as soundproof'ish* as possible. and just so rickfitz doesn't jump all over me, i realize it's not going to contain the sound. i want to build it as good as i can do it without spending a ton of cash.

spec's are 3'w x 4'd x ?tall. should i build a subfloor? flat ceiling or vaulted? how should a insulate the walls? what should i cover them with? one layer of drywall? more? a different material type? should i treat the walls? ceiling?

EZ,

Heavy as possible and sealed up like an aquarium.

So, that translates to good decoupled frame construction and as many layers of drywall as you can afford.
--If you can afford it, frame ceiling to floor, add 2 layers of drywall to the outside, install an exterior type solid core door with frame and weatherstripping, insulate the interior of the stud wall, add 1-2 layers of drywall. You may decouple the floor with 2" of OC 705 and two layers of 3/4" ply screwed together. You'll need lighting and ventilation. -- not to mention the audio lines that will need to be run into the booth. You can get as good isolation as the door will provide, as it will be your weak link.

Cheers,
John

If it's just for the amp, is it feasible to build an iso box instead and put it in the space? I'm in a room in the garage also and I see one of those in my future at some point.

peace,

You should build a little box for your PC and stick it in there too. When I had my PC isolated away from me it made a world of difference in the noise in my "studio..."

Chili,

sure. But you get a much different sound in an iso box vs an iso booth.
