I moved into a new house and my amps are humming when I turn them on.

This is before I even plug the guitar in. I have checked different outlets but no change. I picked up a Monster power conditioner and tried that - it didn't improve the hum. It did tell me that wall voltage was ~ 124V. Is that normal? I can't seem to figure out what this would happen to both amps.

Thanks

Try a ground lift adapter, if they still hum, replace your tubes, and if they still hum, call and electrician.

Have you considered that it might be a sign from God that he doesn't want you to record any more?

Do your amps have a "ground lift" button?

Thanks for replies. I dont see a ground loop button - this is Rivera 55W tube amp and 65W Laney bass amp (a non-tube amp). What's a ground lift adapter and where do i get one?

And I hope I didn't anger God with mediocre guitar playing.

Go to Lowes (or any other hardware type store) and pickup one of these:

It'll have led lights that light up when you plug it in and then you check the light code with the manual to see whether you've got some wires mixed around or something. That'd be where I started anyway.

Do you have lights with dimmer controls? If so, try turning them all off and then check the amp for noise. My kitchen lights are on dimmers and cause problems (if on) when I record.

I totally agree-I've carried one of those testers in my guitar case for years now. It's a good tool to spot poorly wired outlets in a club and at least can help you stay away from ungrounded recepticles.

I lived in a place like that for 18 months where everything hummed no matter what I did.

Playing with the light switches helped - the hum got a lot less when the light in the kitchen (right outside my bedroom) was off, for example.

Eventually, though, I ended up moving before I ever got to the bottom of it, and now I'll never move into a new place without first checking to make sure the wiring isn't bad.
