Hey!

Just for fun, I recorded a cover of "Amos Moses" by Jerry Reed. For those of you that never heard it, it's from the early 70's. I've always loved this tune, so I figured, what the hell.

Just finished mixing this, so any help on levels would be much appreciated.

Thanx

AMOS MOSES

If you want to hear the original, which is awesome, it's right here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=n7GyLr7Cz2g

Love the groove, great guitar sound/tone. Excellent mix, nice clear separation. My only peave (is that a word?) is the vox. If they had a little more compression and volume I'd just hear em better. If you hate compression you could edit the gain out of the peaks and put it in to the parts that fall below the mix, then your not stuck with one compression setting. Just my 2 cents. Cool song too.

Hey man, thanx a lot. No, I got no problem with compression on vocals. I do have them compressed quite a bit. I could probably use some volume automation then, going by what you're saying. There are parts that I had to belt out more than others. I could probably tame them a bit and then bring the vocal track up. Another problem is that I almost always think my vocals are too loud, so it's the thing I have the most trouble mixing.

Thanx for the comments and advice.

That'll work. :)

I remember this song and youtube link helped bring it back.

Frikkin awesome cover. You nailed it. Got the little chuckles in the right place and everything. Can't find nothing to nitpick.

Cool.

btw: Hey effin' old are you?? Wouldn't think you would know this song. :p

I thought there was room to bring them up, but not necessary. They sit good in the mix just the way they are.

The recording and the performance are top-notch, Rami!
I thought the voice could come up a bit in the mix, other than that, a real funky bobbin' tune. Your snare sound gives me a hard-on......:D
Awesome!:)

Hot damn! This is one my favorite songs ever! I've loved this song since I was a little boy growing up in Louisiana. We thought Amos Moses was a real kid and he was legendary amongst us little swamp rat types. :laughings:

Anyway, this awesome. Mix seems perfect to me. It's going on the MP3 player.

Well I wonder where that Looziana sheriff went to? :laughings:

Cool, thanx alot guys. This is just one of those tunes that I knew and always loved. I started screwing around with the opening guitar riff. Once I got that, I said I HAVE to do the tune. I just listened here at work and I can barely hear the vocals. I know they're not as low as these speakers are telling me they are, but I still have to bring them up a bit....just a teenage kunt hair.

Ha! I forgot that you've already mentioned you used to live in Louisiana. Pretty cool.

vocals are the focal point of this song and these definitely need to come up.

NICE job on all the playing and singing and everything ..... drums have a few moments when they don't seem quite right but other than that I've got no nits.

How old are you :D Or is this tune spanning a few decades? This was a 45 I had when I was young for 69cents. The main funky lead riff is too loud on my laptop speakers. I wonder of you took that down the vocals would pop out. hmmmm...
Spankin' good job Rami - one of my all time favs....

Don't do too much. I've listened on the monitors, in the car, and on the MP3 player at the gym. It sounds great everywhere.

I hereby declare this the best MP3 clinic cover ever.

Thanx a lot, guys. Yes, the vocals were low. The Lt. is right about this song being about the vocals. I just up-loaded a new version with the vocals louder and the main riff moved away from centre a little bit.

(Same link as in the OP)

I really appreciate all the help.

Awesome everything. I like the groove you added to it. I think the guitar doing the chicken picken panned right could use a little reverb. Maybe some slap back? It just sounds a bit too dry to me. Other than that, you're golden. Great job.

That sounds really good. I think that you need to work on your hillbilly accent a little more though. You should have watched "Smokey and the Bandit" a few times before recording.

Woohoo!!! :D :D :D

Thanx a lot, Squibble. You're good. The main guitar riff is the only thing I kept totally dry. I thought that's what it needed. Maybe a little verb or slap-back? I'll check it out.

Hehe...I know. There are a few lines that I hear my Canadian-ness. I tried, but didn't want it to sound phony, either. Thanx man.

Agreed. One of my favorite songs ever by one of the most underrated guitar players and songwriters ever. You definately did it justice. Great work!

Only suggestion I'd make is maybe bringing the vocals forward just a touch more and adding an even slighter bit of reverb to them.

p.s. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=C1MpmaDdXdc - I love this live performance, so much fun :)

I, uh, (hanging my head low) never heard this song before :o:o. But I sure like it now! :D I love how that guitar is up front, crystal clear and fits so well. Usually, a guitar that forward would be playing hell with the vocals in my mix. I got a lot to learn...thanks for the schooling once again! Great mix!

:D

Sounds great to me! But I agree with adding a touch of slapback to the guitar. Great separation in the instruments, as usual for a Rami tune.

Great job!

You turnin' Cajun on us? :)
