Hi everone... i have an AMEK DMCL purepath. i use it as my front end going straight into tascam DA38s, bypassing my mackie mixer. when i do drums, i use it on kick and snare, and when i overdub everything else, i use it as well. since i am basically using it for everything, i wonder if anyone thinks that there is a better pre for this purpose other than the purepath. it is hailed as having the cleanest sound a pre can get, and i wonder if that is a good thing or bad. for instance on bass drum....would the "color" of other preamps be more suited for this instrument? i know it would sound better on tape, but i cant afford that, so i gots to do what i can. thanks in advance for any replies.

It seems like the AMEK pre is a very good one to have as your only real preamp. However, adding some others would certainly be a good idea. You wouldn't always use the same guitar or amp for every song and style would you? That example may be a little extreme, but true none the less. Having a selection of mics and pre's is an excellent tool. Not to mention that the more you have, the more your drum tracks get to take advantage of them:) So, if you added a Great River 2 channel preamp, then you could run kick and snare on the GR, and overheads on the AMEK. After that, you will have options for all of your overdubs.

thanks for the advice. i was thinking about a focusrite isa 428, but ill check around about the great river. i never heard of it untill now. thanks again.

Not to say that the Focusrite ISA 428 is a bad preamp, because actually its quite nice. However, it seems to me like it would be to close in style to your AMEK, with your AMEK being the higher quality one. The Great River would be a little more different. Really nice bottom end with a medium speed and a pretty sweet top end. This of course is both an opinion and a generalization. I have also heard really good things about both the Aurora and the Phoenix neve-alike preamps. I have not had the chance to use them yet though. My personal new semi affordable favorite though is the Chandler TG2. I have always loved both API preamps and NEVE's, but for different things. Many people have said that certain pre's sound like a cross between them, but in my opinion noone has really achieved that until the Chandler. That should be enough research for you now. If not, check out Brent Averill, Geoff DaKing, and Pendulum Audio.

im going to look at the great river since you say it is different and id like the diversity. thanks again
