I did a few mic tests today with my new classical and the mics I currently own to see which one I liked best. If you're bored, give a listen and rank them or let me know which one you think sounds best. I was surprised which one I thought sounded best. I'm going to do this again when I get my SP B1 using one of my acoustics.

Mic Tests

Nice test. I was suprised on some cases: One the SM57 sounded good, and the 603 I didn't like much, I actually predicted their Mp3's the wrong way around. Suprisingly for me I like the 3035 the best I think

Hey, this is great. Thanks for posting this.

My favorite - the V67G.

I think I actually like the 603s better than the MK-012s here, though. Are these new mics?

i picked the MK012 as my favorite......

the v67 took the next 2 spots......

surprisingly (to me) the 3035 took the next 2......

then the sm57.....

shockingly the 603 came in dead last to my ears........

Great test!

I know some will say this kind of stuff is useless, but it's at the very least fun! And as tests go, I think this is one of the better ones. Extremely consistent playing, which is very important. Wish I could be that consistent.

Anyway, I definitely liked the sound of the v67 best, it really picked up the sound of your fingers as you plucked. But I thought the self-noise, (at least that's what I THINK it is) is way too distracting, to the point that if this were a real solo piece, it would be unusable without cleaning it up in software. (This is also consitent with my limited experience at using it.)

I liked the 3035 next best, and if this were a solo piece, that's the one I'd use out of this bunch.

Next, the 57. You're 57 sounds better than my 57, btw, but I don't doubt that it's got nothing to do with the mic.

Next, the 603s. From the examples I've heard on this bbs, I'd say it makes a better steel string mic than nylon. Or, maybe it was a placement issue. Just my .02
BTW, if anyone here is old enough to remember, I thought this take had a flavor very reminiscent of Blind Faith's 'Can't Find My Way Home'. That part was kind of cool.

Surprisingly, the MK012 was my least favorite. I say surprisingly just because everybody who has one (not me) seems to love it. Seemed too boomy, and picked up weird resonances. Once again, could be a better steel string mic. Or maybe I just have strange tastes.

Please add the SP B-1 to the list when you get it.

Definitely cool.

I really liked how the V67 sounded from the tests. It had a nice crisp sound to it. I think it would work well with the MK012 (like many folks have suggested here). Amazing how different it sounded 3 inches further away. Just reinforces how important placement is. I liked the 603 too (nice and warm) which wasn't a surprise as I've been recording with them (I have the matched pair) lately. The SM57 was really tough to get quiet but didn't sound half bad once I got the gains set right. A little harsh for me though. I think I could be happy with any of them though, it's all a matter of getting them placed right.
I'm also thinking of getting a tube mic to add to the mix. Maybe a V69 but I have to do more research.

Great test!

I liked the V67G at 9 inches most. Far better than the rest. Interestingly, I rated "test 1" and "test 5" the worst -- which are both the AT3035. Second last came the SM57. On the others, I didn't have a strong opinion (all mid range).

Loved your test. Must say i'm really pleased with the sound of the V67. In fact I just bought a couple myself for acoustic guitar and they sound great too. I was kind of worried because it seems most everyone here seems to like the 603's for acoustic guitar more than any other mic.

my favorite is v67 out front and 603 over the shoulder.....

When you get a chance, could you do this same test over again with a steel string? It would be greatly appreciated. :)

Aaahh

Just read this post. It concludes what I tested this past weekend. Check out my SP B1 post about me bringing it back out again.

So my ears must be getting better.

Thanks

Malcolm
