I've been checking out recently the high quality of the mp3's that get posted here and I feel so ashamed to be posting this.
Let me give you all some background info.

This is a recording I made on a Tascam 424MkII using a single Behringer XM2000 mic over a year ago. I'm playing guitars and bass, and a friend is playing drums. I also conned another friend to sing on the track, however he isn't particularly good. I wanted to post the whole track (approx 4:30mins) so it was only recorded onto the computer at 22 kHz and was converted into mp3 format at 96 kB/s. It was mixed onto the computer from the 4-track using a cheesey pair of computer speakers so I have no idea how it sounds on a decent set of speakers.

What I would like is for those of you with decent monitors hooked up to your computer to let me know what it actually sounds like - I have a sneaking suspicion it lacks a bit of bass!!! I know the quality of the recording isn't great so I won't ask for you comments on that - but just what you think of the track ie. do you like/hate it... and what you think of the playing on the track.

Here's the url:

Please let me know if the above url doesn't work or anything.

I will greatly appreciate ALL comments both positive and negative.

Thanks
Paul

Use that url, but make the "L" in Legend a lower case l and it works.

Paul, I don't have fine computer speakers, so I can't comment on what you asked for. I thought it sounded pretty good for the equipment used.

You're right- there was no low end on that mix. It had that small AM transistor radio sound. In headphones as well as the Event 20/20 passives this was the case, but it was much more noticeable on the monitors.
My V/U clipped in several places but only by 0.4 dB and I couldn't hear any clip-like noises. If you rerecord with the EQ somehow improved, you're gonna need some more headroom to contain the hotter signal you'll be saving to disk.

Thanks for the feedback so far... I guess I was more after what everyone thought of the musicianship than anything. Since that was recorded the band has broken up and I was pondering buying a stack of new gear to go out and try and land a spot in a local band. If I was gonna audition, do you think this track is good enough (disregarding no low end problem) - from a musicianship point of view to show potential bands?

Oh- yeah, the musicianship is there. And that tone that evokes (for me) sulfuric acid dripping on razor blades might be a plus in this market. But nobody that listens to your stuff that is making any decisions regarding your involvement with them on that basis will be a computer, so the overall sound has got to matter. Have you tracked down where the low-end fell out of the mix?
I'm unconvinced that the TASCAM or the 22KHz
digital limitation were the culprits. Either medium can store some thumpin' bass sounds.

Thanks for the reply drstawl - the lack of low end is certainly not due to the computer or anything like that - I've never really managed to capture a thumping bassy sound on the MkII. I can think of a few reasons for this (Please comment on them):
1) My method for recording songs requires that the bass and drums (and sometmes one rhythm guitar) get bounced onto the one track - now presumably I lose 2/3 of the bass intensity when the three instruments are bounced together (cos I also gotta squeeze drums and rhythm guitar onto the same track)
2) When I recorded the bass we basically just stuck the mic 3 feet in front of a 15" speaker cab - I don't how well this works - I've read about D/I'ing bass tracks but have never tried it - maybe this might give me control over the eq problem?
3) The drums were recorded with just the single mic placed about 2 feet in front of the kit - so the drums lack any real "boominess"
