Am I wasting my time?

This may be a weird question to answer but im in abit of a rut here.
First thing you should know is I was a guitar player from my early teens until '98 (15 yrs.) when I was diagnosed with ALS/MND (Lou Gehrig's Disease). Which has rendered my hands useless other than the use of a mouse. My only experience with recording has been in nickle and dime twenty four track studios, covering other peoples music for promo demos.
I've been without music for two yrs. now. I've recently found s.f. fruity loops, and other pc composition software.
So my question is am I wasting my time in search of the making of real music (being limited to this software only)?
I have many high quality samples and a few soft-synths (of which I'm clueless to the parameters of the soft-synths and have no where to find info on this software).
So am I wasting my time?

Hang in there. Where there's a will, there's a way.

Many perfectly healthy people whine and complain about a whole lot less.

The future is software so go for it !.

There are many books on the matter of Synths and software.
Search the web as well there are tons of info.

As to your health. As hixmix has said......

You are not wasting your time. If you don't already know how, learn to score music. It really isn't that difficult. Take a couple of community college classes and you'll have the necessary skills. While your at it, pursue MIDI with a vengence. For good or ill, it is the future.

I've taken some classes from a guy who has a Master's in composition, has played guitar for 25 years, teaches MIDI, guitar, and recording arts at the local community college. He received Academy Award "consideration" for "They're Playing With Fire," Scored four NBC Movies of the Week, worked on the feature film, "The Four Seasons," and has scored music for "Matlock," "Jessie," and several films featured on HBO, Cinemax, and ESPN.

I'm not bragging about this guy, just building credibility. His original compositions are almost exclusively composed and produced using MIDI. You can do it too.

His name is Christy Coobatis, and if you want you can contact him at: ccoobatis@mcc.miracosta.cc.ca.us. I believe he could give you some valuable musical direction if you describe your goals.

Keep at it.

Damn!!! That's the attitude!! Most people I know in your position would've thrown in the towel already, but you're poised to make the best of it. Pesonally, I'll be interested to hear what you come up with. You can only be limited by your mind, so GO MAN GO!!!

I agree with what has been said here by all patrons. I do not think that computer music is very limiting anymore and I think its just going to get easier and better to work with looking at the advances in technology going on at the moment.

I can say the same as Machine, I would also like to know what you come up with. I say this because I have tried with the limited software I have to do some "software only" music and did not get very far. I think that is only my failt though.

Keep us updated and good luck

Technology, despite the disclaimers and misgivings held by some, is truly the great equalizer....anything, and I do mean anything, is possible and workable....gibs

Definitely check out Acid from Sonic Foundry if you haven't already. Its a loop-based composition product that is amazing in how it works and how easy it is to use. Its the most innovative thing I've seen since the advent of teh computer sequencer.

Keep us posted on how you're doing.
