Am I correct in assuming that when you have a keyboard connected to a computer that you can use it for data entry (midi) and for listening to the created midi files, but when it comes time to convert to audio you must use the computers sound card sounds? In other words it really doesn't matter if you have a great sounding keyboard or not because you can't record it's sounds through the computer anyway? Is this true?

When you convert to audio you can run the midi data back through the keyboard and record on it's line out me thinks.

no, you can send the midi back to the midi in of your keyboard and so use the keyboard sounds instead of those of your soundcard.

But then you have to do what NYMorningstar said. Record the keyboard-sounds. Connect the Keyboard to the soundcard, and record the sound... ;)

O.K., but I'm a newbie here. How exactly do I do this? My keyboard is connected through my joystick port, if that matters. Please walk me through how this would work. Thanks so much for the replies. I'd be thrilled if I could use the sounds of my keyboard.

The keyboard has an audio output so you can hear it, right?

You patch the keyboard's audio output to the Line In of the soundcard. You also have a MIDI cable from the keyboard;s MIDI Out to the joystick adapter's MIDI In, and another from the joystick adapter's MIDI Out to the keyboard's MIDI In. When you play the sequence back from the computer, MIDI messages trigger the keyboard to play, and you record the resulting audio. That's it.

AlChuck, thanks for the reply and forgive me for my ignorance in this matter, but how exactly do I patch my keyboards audio output to my soundcards Line In? I assume this is done by cables??? I don't have anything that says "line-in" on my computer. There's USB, Mic., and a headphone jack. And if it is by cables, what exactly do I need. Thanks for taking the time to answer questions that I'm sure you think are really stupid. It's very much appreciated!

 Cables, yes.

Ugh, you have one of those soundcards without a Line In, I guess. Usually the Mic In can be used if you keep the gain low on its preamp, but that will be a mono connection, so you can only record the keyboard output monaurally (most have at stereo outs, but if you use only one of them you can get a mono signal -- the keyboard manual should indicate which of the two doubles as a mono out if only one cable is used.

So you will need a cable with a mono miniplug on one end, and a mono 1/4" or RCA (depending on what the keyboard jacks are) on the other end.

Forget the message I posted above. I do have Line In on my computer. It was hiding. I am now hanging my head in shame at being such an idot. So that being the case, what cables would I need? AlChuck, you are very patient. Thanks!

The Line In is doubtless a stereo minijack, so if your keyboard has a stereo output, you need a cable that has a 1/8" stereo minplug (just like the plug on the end of a pair of Walkman headphones) and two RCA or 1/4" mono plugs on the other end, assuming your keyboard's output is stereo RCA or stereo 1/4."
