Am I afraid of my mic?

I got a AT3035 a week or so ago. This thing has one of the highest SPL ratings I have seen on a condensor. I have been messing with the gain and trying different distances from the mic adjusting the gain to match so that it is just under the red. My question is do you think it is better to be right on top of this thing (with a popper stopper) or a bit back. I have a pretty powerfull voice and don't want to cause it any problems, but with the propper gain settings shouldn't I be able to let this thing have it?

For argument sake, lets just say that I have the perfect room to take that out of the equasion.

I am looking for as much detail as I can get,but I don't want to back off on my vocal support / power.

How have you got your best results?

What do you think?

Thanks for any help

With a popper stopper in place you shouldn't worry about hurting the mic (148 dB max SPL WOW!). Singing very close to a cardioid pattern mic (which the AT3035 is) will produce more lows (via the "proximity effect"). Depending on your voice, and the sound you're looking for, that may/may not be a good thing.

I once did a comparison of sorts with my C1 singing the same phrase into the mic at different distances, and if I recall correctly one of the takes had the mic rotated 45 degrees. Try different things, you may like different sounds for different songs.

I tend to sing around 6-10" from my mic.

Here's another informative site:

go to "learn more about using microphones", then "miking vocals in the recording studio"

I think it's a matter of experimenting with placement and direction until you find what works for you.

Thanks Guys!

I will check these out. I have played with off axis, as well as trying every room in reach:) My bathroom sucks:) And it's quite hard to sing while your wifes on the crapper. Strange sound anomalies????? I am realy wondering about the 2 inch away thing? Not from my wife but from my voice.....

Thanks

usually, for voice, you could start testing from a foot apart. See what that sounds like soloed and in a mix. If it needs more body, move closer and closer till you find the magic spot.
