I have an AT4040 that I use for vocal recording and I like it a lot but it lacks a lil bass and can be shrill sometimes. Can anyone suggest some alternatives in this price range, or maybe any ways I can make this mic work better? I run it through a Line 6 Toneport Ux2 and Reaper. Thanks!

I have two of the at4040 and I have never heard anything come out of them that is shrill or lacking bass. You may need to check your other gear.

Turn off the bass roll-off if you aren't getting enough bass. Still not enough? Turn down the gain and get closer to the mic.

How do I turn off th bass roll-off? I guess I'm not too familar with that..

Should be a switch somewhere. It might be a pushbutton inside the body of the mic. I'm not sure. Maybe somebody who owns a 4040 can answer that.

hey, this is a great topic, I'd be very interested in something else, thats maybe a bit cheaper, any ideas?

It has a switchable high pass filter so there has to be a switch there somewhere - I expect on the casing, rather than inside the mic.

LOW FREQUENCY ROLL-OFF 80 Hz, 12 dB/octave

Usually, yeah, but I would have assumed the original poster would know about it if it were on the outside.

Usually marked like this on one end of the switch:
.____

and this on the other end:
_____

it is on the outside of the mic...there is a 10dB pad and a low end roll off switch. The are just below the grill but I cant remember if its on the front or back of the mic....I should know because I just finished a session where I used one for vox and I had to turn the pad off...

You might also try other positions? Rotating the mic should pull the high end down, closer fuller tone?

I have and like the AT 4047. I don't have the 4040, but I understand the 4047 is a little fuller, especially in close, where the proximity effect takes hold.

If you want to hear the 4047 on a close-miked vocal (unfortunately, it's my voice!) through a Line 6 UX2, go to the first song here, called "Twinkle."

That is the more likely culprit of your "shrillness." I don't have any experience with the Toneport, but it most likely has very cheap preamps and they can sound shrill and strident and boxy--all at the same time.
