My quite little 3" fan is broke and a guy from work gave me a modern 4" type
Dang this things so noisy now i'm affraid it will affect my recordings
Is there such a thing as a quite fan.
Help me out with Ideas please guys.
My cpu overheats if i dont put the fan on
computer is an ibm think centre 2.8 ghz

Ok, A few obvious ones first.
Don't run it without a fan again. That really could kill your cpu.

Did you put the 4" one on the right way, so it's taking air away from the cpu rather than blowing it into the heatsink?
Usually you should be able to see the flat round centre piece.

I'm in Northern Ireland and I have a spare arctic freezer pro 7. It's a big bulky slow cooler that i found to be pretty quiet.
If it physically fits your board, you're welcome to it.

I used it on a lga775 socket (core2quad).

Ah mistake no 1
I put the fan on upside down ok
i'll fix that right away
I'll get back to you thanks Paul

the fan has a little plastic 3 pin connector on it (four pin on the new big one)
I have no idea what its called.
I managed to wedge the fan in position a bit better by jamming it in with a bit of plastic, I can only get it to hold in place with 1 screw its so big.
its a tad quiter now but still noisy.
it seems to be the fans bearing that makes most of the noise.
I guess its designed for an office where a few more db of noise is negligable.
i'll take you up on your offer mate
thanks let me know how much i owe you ok

Ok, that might answer some questions.
Is the motherboard fan header 4pin? It should be.

A three pin fan in a 4 pin port has no fan speed control (according to intel), so perhaps it's running full blast all the time?

My freezer pro is 4pin.
If you need it just square up the postage pal, unless it's an embarrassingly small amount.

mother board has 3 pin defo mate i'm not sure its gonna suit mate
im still looking into it
I measured the noise and it was a full 20 db with the big fan
i did find this though if you think it might be as well i'd value your opinion

AcoustiFan: DustPROOF 70mm fan

I can't see why it wouldn't be fine, but for the price I'd probably just buy a heatsink/fan combo.

I honestly don't know for sure though. Sorry dude. :)
