Hi All. I have searched far and wide for a definitive answer of the age old question, is there another compatible internal CD-RW drive for the VF160?

The only answer from the old forum (cached on Google) is the TEAC CD-W28E.

There are several versions of this drive out there, but which one definitely works? And will it fit? Does it need a special bracket? Does duct tape work just as good? (kidding)

I have foregone the internal cdr-drive option since purchase and opted for Optical pipe mixdowns instead (which are excellent, I must say). Now it would be nice to have for backups.

Thanks!

I have one of them here and, in a few days, I'm going to install it (my original CD-1A is giving me aborted burns, apparently from a crimped ribbon connector*) and see. The original posting claimed that the drives were pulls from the discontinued VF line.

*. . .and after only about 3-4000 burned disks. . .

According to a Fostex product bulletin from 2005, this drive is supposed to work with the VF160EX: Western Digital Caviar WD400BB/WD800BB. Looks like you can still find them out there.

Any thoughts on whether I should pick one of these up for my VF160EX even though it doesn't need a new drive now? You never know what will happen down the road and maybe I won't be able to find a replacement.

Hi msr. Are you referring to the hard drive? Perhaps you responded on this post by accident? We are discussing the CDRW drive.

Actually I do have something to contribute to your query. I bought an 80GB OEM Maxtor drive and it formatted and ran fine. Don't have the exact spec, but it closely matched the ones on the approved list.

Since they are so cheap now days, see if you can steal one from a friend who is chucking their old computer, or go to a PC recycle place.

Paj, I am dying to hear your results! "Buy Now" button finger on standby!

Oh, sorry, you are correct. I was thinking you were looking for a replacement hard drive. My mistake.
