Has anyone used or is using any vintage Altec rack equipment? Anyone have any experience with the 1650 EQ?

See attached photo. I know it's not as useful as a paragraphic, but what im wondering is if these things are known to impart any interesting tones to the sound source (it's an 'active eq' - what does that mean???)..im thinking of using it on Bass guitar, kick drum or toms. I've got software paragraphic's to acheive more precise eq.

Are you trying to say Parametric?
I have an SAE 1800...there are a few studios on google using them...notably one that had a fairchild as the only other one there. it sounds good and can do 2 seperate bands per channel.
Ill suspect that that is better for PA use and I would pass on it because unlike models made for recording or high end audio...PA stuff will tend to be noisy...if you find an old PA mixer though its a keeper.

Yup, my bad...i meant to write parametric!
I have not heard to much about this unit, especially for studio
use, but its been rumoured that Altec put out some decent stuff back in the day. I definetly won't get it this thing if it turns out to be a run of the mill PA unit though...Thanks

I love all the old Altec equipment, I don't care if its an eq, compressor, mic pre, mixer... it has a sound that I really love, I love it like I love the Spectrasonics 610. If you are doing chamber music, pass, but if you are recording almost any type of rock and you can get a good deal on the unit, I'd say go for it, if it's a little noisy who cares, noise is not the end of the world, it keeps my mixes from sounding too sterile.
