my next 2 purchases i want to get:
- monitors
- mackie 1202 pro mixer (with those nice pres...yeah...ha)

so, for monitors i'm looking at cheap ones - studiophile sp 5b.
i've heard lots of different stuff. like stuff with LOTS of highs, the speakers start to distort. There is not a huge low end (well they are tiny little speakers! ha)...so dont use for hip hop, etc. etc. Some people say there is even some natural reverb it puts on everything...

anyway, is it worth it? right now i'm using baby advent II stereo speakers..so i assume it'd be a FEW steps up at least right? ha.

as for the mackie...
right now i have a dmp2, and a behringer 802a. the behringer of course is budget as hell, and crappy as hell for the most part. the dmp2 is such a noticable degree better then the behinger.
i use it all with the delta 44...and am wondering how the pre's on the mackie would compare to the dmp2...? in addition, is it worth it - over the monitors? my mixes seem to come out decently already, but i wouldn't REALLY know, since i've never tryed a pair of monitors! haha.

thanks guys.

m-Audio is great if you're seriously on the cheap...but don't get your monitors from them.

Really, check into the low end Tannoy, Event 20/20's, etc.

The Mackie pre's are going to be sterile and lifeless, but they are usable. I wouldn't buy a 1202 just for the pres. Also, make sure you're looking at the 1202 VLZ at least.

but i just read an article on prorec saying how the 1404's pre's (vlz pro) were better then all the other pre's (baically) that they talked about....and the 1404 is the same as the 1202 in terms of pre's right? (thats what i read on the mackie site..)...

anyway...that's enough to convince me for now. i guess i'll save up for something like that once i have, say, a delta 1010? ha.

monitors will be my next by i take it. maybe an art tube pre too...try to warm up my stuff, eh?

I have a pair of older Tannoys and I'll vouch for their balanced sound and quality. They drop off below about 60 hz, so you'll need to keep that in mind, but that may be different in the newer versions.

As a side note, I blew a tweeter in one of them (bad case of "Can I hear that solo louder?") and I was surprised to find that replacing it was cheap and easy. A phone call to the local dealer, $23 and 3 phillips head screws later, it was done.

I have the studio sp5bs and although I've never heard the tannoys or the events, I dont think they are bad monitors.. I wasnt doing so well at first but after using them for 5 or 6 months I'm starting to understand them..

Middleman I think has a rather large thread going about the sp5bs and their placement and such if you do a search, but if so many heads are in agreement here that the tannoys and events are better monitors (and you havent done anything stupid like run out and buy them just because you needed to have them RIGHT NOT) then you should probably listen to them.

I have the 802a mixer too which sucks doggie nuts.. why dont you sell the 802a, get the mackie, and buy a nice pre-amp instead of worrying about the pres in the mackie.

Whats a few more hundred bucks?

Are you listening to your mixes on different systems? ie. in the car, little boom box, big boom box, friends boom box, walkman, high end stereo system? Thats where the monitors come into play.. the help you mix so that your final mix comes out even through all of them.. naturally if your mixing on baby advent II stereo speakers, and then playing back on baby advent II stereo speakers, chances are its going to sound good... Through that shit in your car, playstation, stereo, dvd player etc.

Damn... my recordings are sterile and lifeless :( :(

I'm curious to see what preamp Slack recommends. I'm in the market for an inexpensive pre.
